Just wondering if they really afford increased leverage for better/easier bolt handle lift(?). Thanks.

I only seen a pic, and I would worry about it hitting the scope ??

Better to get a aftermarket handle & any 5/16-24 thread bolt knob you wish. This absolutely increase leverage & gives a better feel. Not to mention looks better.

I use a Titanium Bolt Handle from Lumley, I Cerakoted black, and a Titanium bolt knob I machined.

Can also thread cut down the factory bolt handle & thread the end 5/16-24 like I did here. (Also Cerakoted Armor Black). This one received a Polymer bolt knob I machined from black Delrin.

We shall see, threw one in the basket while getting a couple mags during the black Friday sale.

Me too. Just wondering if replacing the whole handle with a Savage tactical handle might be best (?).

It is best. I just told you that. It’s among the first things I recommend people do. The MDT or any other bolt knob “cover” only adds a couple millimeters of length. Not enough for any leverage increase. And they really aren’t very aesthetically pleasing.

I can kind of see the reason to try one on some rifles- but not on a savage. I've seen lots of them (not MDT brand but the same thing) on Rem 700's- but that is a different animal. On the 700 the bolt is one piece and the handle is not removable- so to adjust your bolt handle requires more tools and know-how. So people will try these clamp on things. With the savage it is easy to replace the bolt handle so it doesn't seem worth it. Also- those little clamp on things are almost the same price as the savage tactical bolt handle- which is longer and already threaded.

I’ll share this as well. Now I have some machining and tooling which makes this much easier/quicker.. but this guy does it with all hand tools. And he does a pretty fantastic job!

Making your own bolt knob is a bit more involved, but doable with your own belt grinder, and you can:

This is Titanium a fun, but can do Delrin polymer, Alumium, steel if you wish.
