when my dad died, he had a TC Contender in a 14" factory muzzle brake in 7x30 Waters. now it is mine and i don't have issue with 7x30 Waters...i loathe the muzzle brake!!!! so i was going put to on a 10" barrel in 45 Colt, but i thought a 357 Herrett would be the bee's knees. so i bought a TC Contender 10" barrel in 30 Herrett:rolleyes: from a auction. :o

i got like 400 new pcs of 30-30 starline brass (i bought 500 pcs for the 35/30-30) and they are in my drawer, waiting. now i'm on the lookout for 30 Herrett dies. i about choked when i seen the price of jacketed bullets. sheesh, i'll use cast boolits, thank you very much.

the 10" barrel comes with open sights and i will see if i can use them. my eyes ain't what they used to be. (nearsightedness but i have presciption glasses) if not, i have a pistol scope somewhere. i have a MGM scope mount that was on my TC Encore. i wonder if it will fit on a Contender?

i'll use it to hunt close cover deer, 60 yards and under(30-40yards is average). the 30 Herrett will shoot a 130gr gc hp or a 150gr gc rnhp boolits. i'll load it at 1700-1900fps.

will you either choose the 130gr or the 150gr?

You’ll need a base for a Contender as the radius is different on the Encore barrels.

I would get a box of each weight and see which is more accurate. The 130 would be my first choice in a pistol otherwise but either should work at the short distance you stated. May have to try some of them myself as i have several 30 calibers along with 30 herett also.

For a 10" in 30 Herrett, the original recommended hunting bullets were in the 110 to 130 gr range.

Back in the day, nothing heavier was considered likely to expand.

With cast bullets, your alloy will determine expansion. Good luck.

Are you looking for a new home for the 7x30 Waters 14 inch Contender barrel/brake? If it is a factory brake there is no easy way to put the 7mm brake on a 45 cal barrel.

i probably take 7x30 to my gunsmith and have him cut off the muzzle brake and crown the barrel. what he does with the muzzle brake is NOT my concern. i loathe the muzzle brake. it is not needed.

I can certainly understand the thoughts on the brake.

A "funny" brake story, my T/C custom shop 256 Win Mag barrel has a brake on it. I have no idea why. It's such a tiny cartridge (357 magnum case necked down to .257). At least it doesn't generate enough energy to actually be loud.

when my dad bought (sometime in the early '90s) it, the muzzle brake fad was in. i tried it in a Savage m116 with an adjustable muzzle brake. yes, the recoil and the muzzle brake of '06 was nil. i say it was like the recoil of the 243 Win. my ears, even tho i had ear plugs in them, were ringing. when my dad shot his Contender with a muzzle brake and ear plugs in, his ears were ringing too. and i won't tell you about the compression wave and what it does to your spotter!!! but still, Dad shot alot of whitetails with that gun.

Are you interested in a trade? Braked barrel for no brake? Mine is a 14” 7-30 Waters, unfired by me. If so, send me some pics and I will return pics.
