I was given my dad's old hunting rifle. I know this rifle is getting old. I'm a 1961 model myself. I was wondering if I should buy back up parts for it. And if so what parts should I buy?
Thanks on advance.
John.

Thanks Dad

Not really. Something breaks it just breaks. Not really any of those parts that break on every rifle. I would just go over it with a fine tooth comb. Look for anything badly worn & go from there. Another bit is you have a Pre-‘66 Savage 110. Many of the parts are different from Post-‘66 rifles, and more difficult to find. Some, outright impossible!

Not much to go wrong with it that a good cleaning would not fix. If properly stored it should be good. Just to be on the safe side I'd clean the bore and chamber before shooting.

Pre-66 parts aren't readily available like post-66. I buy spares when I see them so I don't have to hope to find them at later date.

Savage didn’t offer the detachable magazine in the 110 until 1966 and the OP’s 110L is from 1963. It’s called a Pre-‘66 as there was a complete feature & parts change done between the Pre & Post 1966 rifles, including offering a detachable magazine system.

Just so the OP can visualize the differences

Pre-1966 bolt is on the left, 1966-present is on the right

Pre-1966 on top, 1966-present on the bottom
Note that the bolt head retaining pin was re-orientated 90-degrees in relationship to the lugs with the change between the two.

Have to wonder why Savage made such drastic bolt changes when Remington is still so proud of their “3 Rings of Steel”.

Like most all changes to firearms in the early to mid 1960's, it was all about simplifying production and cutting costs. What a lot of people don't know or realize is that the receiver itself is about the only thing that wasn't change with the redesign. The pre-1966 trigger assembly was shorter in overall height - so much so that if you tried to put a post-1966 barreled action into a pre-1966 stock it wouldn't seat because the bottom of the trigger would be in contact with the trigger guard and the action would be sitting about 1/8" or so proud of the saddles in the stock.

Fortunately it was fairly easy to "upgrade" those pre-1966 guns to modern components by simply purchasing a post 1966 bolt assembly and trigger group (or more commonly an aftermarket trigger). Now with the pre-1966's gaining some collector value though we urge people not to use them for building a custom rifle.
