View Full Version : 10/110 vs 12FV bolt differences?

My first Savage rifle build starting with a 10 short action has turned into 2 … a build and a rebuild or modification.

The 10 was bought as a loaded action, and I added a .22-250 barrel and put it in an older accustock with AICS DBM and magazine.

The second project started as a new Cabela’s 12FV in .223 with a blind mag; now wearing a 6.5 CM and is in a new accufit accustock with Savage DBM and magazine.

Swapping the bolt face on the 12FV, I noticed the bolts are somewhat different. The most obvious is the 12FV bolt does not have a cocked indicator, while the 10 bolt does.

I also finally noticed the bolt shroud is different between the .223 (longer) and the 6.5, when I test fit the magazine, so a new (short) bolt shroud is on its way from Midway.

When I swapped the .223 bolt face out for the .308 and followed a YouTube video for adjusting the firing pin protrusion, I lost count of number of turns it took to remove the cocking piece off the firing pin and spring. I was counting turns and it popped off at the same time the video presenter was doing the same, so now I don’t know if he (or I) was counting full or half turns. So, how do I make sure I’ve reassembled the firing pin correctly?

I think I saw somewhere on line to compress the spring to a specific measurement … will do another search for that.

Edit: found it in the FAQ of all places! :)

After you set the FP protrusion, install the spring and the lock washer, then compress the spring and thread the cocking piece on. Adjust the cocking piece until the spring is compressed to a length of 1.900" for a short action, 2.600" for a long action.

Edit: found another source explaining compressing the firing pin spring while still assembled in order to adjust pin depth. Doesn’t require removing the cocking piece end. Another good lesson. :)

Anything else I should have noticed or should know, specifically related to the 2 bolt differences?

Thanks!
Greg

Don’t worry on the number of turns. Set the pin protrusion first, then just turn the cocking piece to set the cocking piece pin just shy of hitting the bottom of the bolt channel. (Picture) This gives the maximum amount of “Fall”, aka firing pin travel. Some recommend setting it up to .080” away from the bottom channel wall to lessen bolt lift. I have found there are better means of the same, while maintaining maximum pin fall.

By the by.. the bolts are the same and parts are actually interchangeable. Even in the wake of the difference of a cocking indicator. I’m wondering, does your rifle with the cocking indicator have the 1-piece firing pin, or just the indicator? Below is a look at the two different firing pins. There is also a 2-piece firing pin with the indicator as well. The 1-piece pin is not adjustable in any fashion.

2-piece with the cocking indicator.

This is my bolt with the cocking indicator (minus 1 small piece from the firing pin cocking indicator end as I tipped it down, that decided to hit the floor and disappear under the work bench … will have to expand your photo to see what I’m looking for now) :(

And this is the 12FV bolt with the .223 bolt shroud and the .308 bolt head.

Ok, looks like I'm searching for a washer that goes between the 2 springs.

You have the 1-piece firing pin on one & 2-piece on the other. The 1-piece, like I said, is not adjustable. Pin protrusion is set by filing down the tip.

Don’t worry about that washer. Just get one one of Desh’s Bolt Lift kits. You don’t reuse the washer with it.

But I recommend this lift kit for your 2-piece firing pin. The single point is more efficient. Obviously it won’t work on the pin with an indicator.
