Met a fellow at the local shooting range yesterday and was discussing Savages and he asked about changing a 260 to a 300 WSM or something similar, I know the bolt head needs replaced, what else?
Are the magnums large or small shank?
The reason I'm asking he said if I would remove the 260 barrel I could have it a 2 boxes of ammo, but I need to know a little about the questions I asked before removing the barrel.
thanks

They have been Large Shank for many years, but they were first introduced as Small Shank. Barrel & Bolt head. (I recommend getting a PTG). It will work just fine, and has been done many times by other members.

If I may piggy back a question while we're on this subject, can a Savage 308 barrel be safely reamed for a 300wsm chamber? I know it would still require a bolt head swap.

260rem & 300WSM are both long range cartridges. 338 Federal is NOT.

400 yard energy, 400 yard trajectory
260 rem, 1100 ftlbs, -21"
338 fed, 1600 ftlbs, -25"
The 338 Federal is actually the most well-rounded cartridge of the entire 308 family

Ok, if you say so. People who buy off the shelf have the option of 2 or 3 different brands of loaded ammunition. And for those who reload, they have an “extravagant” choice of a few different bullets, with the huge weight range of 185gr & 200gr bullets. WOW! LOL! J/K
It makes more energy, sure. Good hunting round, but just not many choices. Which means it’s NOT a target round. So I’m not quite sure how you can call it the “most well rounded” of the family?? It’s a one trick pony with very little choice in factory ammo or bullets for reloading.
