Do you have Short or Long Action? The mag box, followed are different. Bolt head is different.

This is an Axis. Shouldn't the .243 bolt head work with the longer cartridge?

The 243 win and 25-06 use the same size bolt face..... if it is like a regular savage that had a short action cartridge built on a long action then you would need a different bolt baffle- but the bolt face would be the same. But not sure on a axis what the setup is.

LOL! Duh..:redface-new: Thanks Charlie. I forget what sub-forum I’m in at times. So, yeah.. no Long/Short Action.

Savage makes 2 separate Boltheads for 308 & 30-06 class of cartridges. 308 is .473” +/-, 30-06 is .470” +/-. A few Thous. May not seem like a big deal. But I’ve read the bolt face is .480”. So yeah, should work fine.

Problem is the stock & magazine parts.

I would imagine the difference is variable as .003 fits into a reasonable manufacturing tolerance. Having clearance is a good thing since a line to line fit would cause problems.

Yes, although there are separate part number, (because one is SA & one is LA), I’ve read they are both machined to .480”. The source I’m quoting is PTG.

I guess they don't realize that a .473 rim will not fit in a .470 bolt face counter bore.

Wall, honestly I haven’t measured a factory 308 bolt head face to a factory 30-06. Never done it myself, but heard of people going back & forth. Some no problems, some not so much… but who knows?? It’s just interweb jargon. I don’t know if they are BOTH cut to .480”, as PTG lists, or maybe one can go from 30-06 to 308, but not vice versa?? I gave away my last factory 308 bolt head to another member & I no longer have a 30-06 to measure.

I will say, both being .480” does seem a bit loosey-goosey. The .007” play for the 308, well ok. But then another 3 thous. for 30-06? Just sounds like a lot even for the limited capacity of a hobby machinist like me.

You can go back and forth because they are the same..... they both have a .473 rim (or if you want to get technical some sources list the 308 as a .4728). I've never heard of anyone offering a different bolt face between 308 and 30-06- even on custom actions they are both just a "standard". As far as the .007 play- that would not be any issue because the bolt face is not designed to be tight around the case head. The case head itself is designed to be strong enough to handle the pressure.

I went from a factory .270 Win to 7-08 Rem to .22-250 to .250 Savage on an Axis with no change in bolt heads. The 7-08 fed from the .270 mag, but the .22-250 would not, so I got the short action trigger guard from Savage and a .22-250 specific magazine from a gun shop. The .250 feeds correctly from the .22-250 mag as the .250 is the basis for the .22-250.
