View Full Version : Axis barrel on 110 & reaming to 6.5x57 questions

I'm in the process of putting together a 6.5x57 Mauser on an older Savage 110 action. I found a lead on a local sporter weight 6.5 CM off of an Axis, which I am assuming is the same "small shank" as the 110. Here is my question...what are the odds a 6.5x57 reamer will clean up the CM chamber enough without having to cut new threads? My goal is to do this as cheaply as possible, but if I am going to have threads cut I might as well use a new/unchambered barrel. I know the 6.5x57 has slightly more taper than the CM, but I can't tell for sure if its enough to be problematic.

Haven't done it so I can’t say for sure, but just looking at the Sammi specs I’d it’s gonna be problematic. End up with kind of a funky, loose chamber.

Just wondering, why don’t you want to set back & add a few threads?

Lathe work just adds to the cost....plus, if I'm going to cut a few threads, might as well just thread a new barrel.

Personally, if I was going to do an old classic like the 6.5x57, great idea by the way!, I would go with the new barrel....plus a walnut stock!

Using the reamer is lathe work. What do you mean adds to the cost? Are you doing this yourself, or having a shop do?

There is no way you can hand ream a chamber perfectly round by hand. you are randomly going to put side pressure on it at times and end up with an egg shape to some degree. there will be many variables to how much. fixtures, reamer sharpness, fatigue, ect... will effect you got lucky to you destroyed it. If your determined to not re-thread but still want to re-chamber, maybe ackley?

I don’t think he meant he was reaming by hand… we’re you jason280? Hope not, because yeah… won’t work very well.

I would bet gunsmith work. Cost for rechamber is minimal. Cost to cut and face barrel, turn new threads, and rechamber would probably double or triple the cost.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking now. Just hard to tell from the initial post. Partly sounded like DIY partly, sounded sounded like pay for work.

LOL cheaply as possible reminded of my doller per hour youth and wanting a .22 mag. I had an extra .22 rifle and a set of drill bits!
