Yet another super-dee-duper “breakthrough” cartridge.. YIPEEE! The 277 Sig or 6.8x51mm as the small allotment for the US Army contract is called. So they take a 6.8mm (.277”), 140gr pill and ramp up the SAAMI pressure to 80,000PSI (KABOOM), by way of a futuristic 2-part, “Hybrid” case, the case head being steel and case body being brass. Which means it’s proprietary to one maker; Sig themselves (of course) Oh… did I mention it’s ONLY safe to shoot in Sigs new line of oversized rig, clearly blushing us to copy the looks of the Armat Battlefield Systems M41A “Pulse” rifle. (Although it was 10mm, LOL!) Or perhaps the Mobile Infantry “Morita” MK1 Assault Rifle. (Let’s see if anyone knows that reference, haha)

Here’s an article with some more info. Impressed….Excited…Convinced? I’m not.

Excited? Not even a little. Convinced? Yeah. Convinced that someone got paid well for this debacle.

Bet it would be an interesting money trail.

Yeeeup, & yup! I agree. On an aside note having to do; my outlook is our country will continue rely on the AR15 base weapon & 223 for some time to come. One could say “well the Marine Corps switched!” Mmmm.. the Corps simply adopted a different style. They went to the HK416 which shares many parts with any AR15. Even THIS was a money thing, as the DI system (the major difference between the AR & 416), has never been a failure point.

M27IAR (HK416) is over 3K a pop but it is a good weapon.

"I could kit out every grunt in the Marine Corps with the coolest s...t head-to-toe for $100 million....and I intend to do that." General Robert Neller. Former Commandant of the Marine Corps.

I am glad that he feels that way. Maybe he could even break through all the civilian roadblocks to make it happen.

After watching the military R&D system at work from the inside I lost all confidence that our troops get the best stuff. Add to that politics and you get a lot of stuff that is mediocre at best. I suspect the Sig deal had a bit of the political angle working.
