View Full Version : Precision Elite Muzzle Brake Ineffective

I recently purchased a Precision Elite in 6mm Creedmoor. The rifle is a tack driver but the recoil was much more than I expected for a 6mm heavy rifle. Recoil felt almost the same as my Remington 700 in 308 Winchester which doesn't have a muzzle brake. Meanwhile, I noticed the guy next to me is shooting a Savage 110 Hunter in 300 Win Mag and his rifle appears to have very little recoil. After asking him about it, he invited me to shoot his rifle and I was amazed. Here is a rifle about half the weight as mine, shooting a much more powerful cartridge but with recoil that felt about half of what I was experiencing on my Elite. The muzzle brake he had was a Strike Industries J-Comp but unfortunately for me, they don't make one for 6mm.

I've since removed the muzzle brake and will replace it. Would appreciate hearing if anyone has had a similar experience and what they did about it.

I have no experience with a Precision Elite, but I put a Harrell's on a 308 Hog Hunter and it made a huge difference.

6.5 Creedmoor with more recoil than a braked 300WM....never experienced that either.

google muzzle brake design (https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=muzzle+brake+design&spell=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwihqcGLmdX2AhUkNX0KHeAMBaIQkeECKAB6BAgBE DI) and learn directly what you need to know about noise direction, recoil reduction and gas flow.
Savage's early twist on/off brake was nothing special. Magna Port is for muzzle rise control not specifically recoil reduction.

Actually, a 6mm Creedmoor.

A 6 creedmoor with no muzzle brake should have as much recoil as a 308/300WM w/brake. It should be about the same as a 243 depending on the bullet weight and charge.. You need to contact Savage.

Here are a couple articles about brakes that may be helpful -

Look up MDT's video of their brake test for amount of gills. They use a
swinging protractor to visually see the effect of the brake.

If it has that much recoil, I'm wondering if it could be an over pressure problem? Maybe the chamber or throat is wat too tight? Ammo loaded too hot? A heavy 6mm should be a *****cat to shoot without a brake.

I was shooting the Hornady 6mm 108gr Match ELD cartridges. They chronographed at 3025 fps out of a 26" barrel.
I plan on purchasing another muzzle brake for comparison but haven't decided on which one yet.

OK, I purchased an Area 419 Match muzzle brake to replace the stock one and it did make a difference in felt recoil. The Area 419 brake was specific to 6mm bullets and stamped as such on the front. The opening measured .270 inch compared to the stock one which measured .292. I suspect the tighter tolerance had something to do with the reduced recoil along with the more angled baffle design and the extra ports. I don't know at this point if it affected accuracy as there were strong winds. That will have to wait for a better day.
