What Model Bolt Action Do I Have? - 250-3000 w/ Weaver 330 post Scope in Stith Mounts

I just bought this. I know very little about Savage Bolt Action Rifles so I would like help in identifying the exact model I have. Serial no. 102xx.

It has a Weaver model 330 2-3/4X scope w/ post in Stith mounts.

I found lots of pictures on Google, but none have all the "exact" features of this one. Can you help?

Thanks for the reply.

The gun pictured in the link you sent is different. The stock does not have the snabel forend, and the mag release is different. That's why I'm having difficulty identifying the exact model of my gun.

Grail gun! Like the search for the holy grail!! Hard to come by but worth the effort. The hunt is part of the fun anyhow.

The stock probably went through several configurations in it's lifetime. I have two model 23's, the earlier model has a Schable but the later one has a more classic styled forearm.

There were only about 6000 M45's made.

I believe this is the Model 40. The Model 45 had the additional checkering and Lyman 40 receiver sight. This stock is uncheckered and is not relieved for the side mounted sight. I believe this is the earlier production stock, without the schnabel. Counter-intuitive, I know, but the less modern stock came later.

That is a fantastic scope and Stith mount!

The difference between the two was that the 45 was checkered and had a Lyman receiver sight that the stock was relieved for, other than that the stocks were the same. The posters rifle appears to be an early 40 in a late style stock. The change to the schnabel fore end and adding a butt plate cap were first seen in the 1935 catalog.

Here are some catalog pages which kind of track the changes, the Model 45 ended up being dropped before the Model 40 which then got checkering.

One difference that no one ever mentions is the magazines. The earlier (“NRA”) stock with the bottom mag release had a 4 round magazine that protruded below the stock. The later schnabel stock with the side mag release button had a 3 round, flush mounted magazine. I only have a couple of schnabels, so I don’t know if the 3 rounders work in the NRA stocks.

Production ceased in 1940 when Savage received a contract to manufacture Enfields for the British.

It kind of looks like it morphed into the 340, after the war!!

If I didn’t already have a couple of 243s, I’d be right there with you. Great chambering for a couple of light and nimble rifles.

The post war 340 was significantly different in design. With the barrel nut, it was the immediate predecessor to the 110.
