I was looking at my new rifle, cycling the bolt to get a feel for it and noticed scratches on the front of the bolt, on what I believe is the extractor.

Is this a problem? Should I worry about it? I honestly don't know.

The scratches are on this area.

I’d have to see a picture to make certain, but if you mean just surface scratches, it’s fine. Likely just got some grit on the sides casing light scratches is all.

FYI, this is after inserting the bolt and cycling it a couple times. The bolt head lugs, I now know that's what that is, were shiny and brand new looking. Is that a problem?

was it as smooth as the baffle (rotating piece) before you cycled it? only place it could get that direction of scratch is down the side of the receiver. rotating would have a different direction of scratch.
add some magic marker and see if it rubes off.

Won’t cause an issue. Maybe look in the Action on the side that lug of the bolt travels. See if there is anything unusual. Likely just some rough machining. Pretty normal with lower cost, mass produced parts. But just make sure there are no foreign particles. You can smooth ito out some using lapping compound. I actually have several bags Silicone Carbide & Aluminum Oxide media, of different coarseness. I mix it with grease to make my own lapping compound in varying grit level, and I’ve smoothed Actions like that. But it’s only for “Feel”. Won’t affect performance.

Ok, I'll invest in some lapping lapping compound soon. I did watch this vid last night while doing research.

I assume this is exactly what you are referring to.

What he calls "recoil lugs" in the video are not. They are locking lugs.

LOL Yeah, people also pointed that out in the comments.

If you want, send me your info in a personal message. I’ll send you a couple bags with the different media grits I have. You can mix it with grease or even Vaseline, works great. I have a TON of this stuff!

Yes, it was as smooth.

I think it happened when inserting the bolt.

What do you guys think of these lapping tools? Are they necessary? I see them for Savage in both small and large.

That surface should be hard enough to resist normal scratches

More work then I'm going to do. Did what Dave is suggesting once.

Then I wonder when or what did it.

So for what I am doing it's a no.

Lapping the lugs is what that tool is designed for. That is not where your having issues. Yours are on the side in the raceway.

Nah.. Just lap with the media I’ll send.... like I said. You can lap everything at the same time. There are “How To” vids on YouTube showing precisely how. It’s what I’ve done and an exception lug surface mating. Only thing is after you are finished. You need to clean, clean, CLEAN! Acetone & go to town!
