McGowan offers their Pre-Fit in Savage Sporter which is .585” at 22”. At 20” the profile will cause a slight increase in diameter it the barrel will be a good under 3lbs. Likely around 2-1/2lbs. That’s a pretty darn light barrel.

I cant figure out mcgowan.. x caliber and shaw both list the shank end diameter as 1.058 and 1.055, while mcgowan lists as 1.062? Will this affect the barrel nut?

It's small shank, large shank is nearly 1 1/8" or 1.120"

No. The barrels are all fine. There is only SMALL(AKA Regular) & LARGE shank. The Small shank is 1-1/16”. 1/16” is .0625”, but even the 1.055” is just .007” difference.

I meant the starting diameter at the shank end. Either way I settled it. Went with the shaw blued barrel at 21", I'm a sticker for blue. I airways give in to a classic look. As long as it shoots minute of deer I'm good. Figured I could use the savings towards a boyds stock (which I'll order next week in case prices go up due to all the craziness) so I'll have a project this summer. Worst case scenario I'll have a new boyds stock for my 243 lol

Absolutely... That’s what I was referring to. The “starting diameter at the shank end” as you said, or beginning of the chamber, rather the threaded Tenon, is threaded 1-1/16”x20, or 1.06x20. The few thousandths in question are simply the major diameter of the thread, and the fitment into the mating Action thread.

Glad you got it worked out though. I’m sure the Shaw barrel will work out very well for you. All in all, it should be a decently light & handy rifle for hunting. And of course, all nice & legal(to satisfy Iowa’s RIDICULOUS, & UNCONSTITUTIONAL law!) Looking forward to seeing your completed project. Or better yet, post a “Build Thread” with updates throughout. Those of us who build LOVE those threads!

I've had a couple of Shaw barrels (308, 7mm/08) that initially were "copper mines" but finally settled down after about 60 rounds. Accuracy has always been excellent for sporter barrels. The 7mm/08 is 22" and the 308 is a heavy sporter at 24"

I've noticed with almost any rifle I've owned that they're dirty as heck and seem impossible to clean until I get at least a few boxes through. After that a squirt of cleaner down the barrel and a bore snake seems to be about enough unless it's the occasional deep clean. The new 110 in 350L I got for my wife and kids seemed pretty dirty and fouled until around 40 or 50 rounds then it started cleaning up to a mirror shine in the barrel. Im not too worried.. even if it fouls and my groups go from say to an inch to inch and a half occasionally thats still within 3 at 200 yards... my max shot in my property would be about 150

I shoot mostly Shilen SM, Criterion and a few McGowens. Only had one Shaw, a 338-06.

FWIW barrel shot great. Was ugly, fouled and coppered up pretty bad, but was really accurate.

Actually kind of miss it.

If you can bump your budget up another $100 X-Caliber has another sale starting tomorrow and will make a .358 It will be a much higher quality barrel than a Shaw...

I agree the X-Caliber are quality barrels. I have one of each. A shaw and a X-caliber. The Shaw was the standard "sporter" (which is really a heavy sporter compared to the factory contour) and I cut it to 20" and sent it off to twisted barrel to have six straight flutes cut into it. It came out perfect. Just 2 lbs. total for a 20" 7mm-08 barrel. The X-caliber barrel is chambered in .284 Win and is their featherweight contour. It's 21" and weighs 2 lbs. 5 oz. total. They both shoot 3/4" routinely (and often better) with the right loads. I only spent the $100 on the fluting after I knew that Shaw barrel was a shooter. It sure is.
