I want ( don’t need ) a thumper as hogs beginning to come on our deer lease. I have short and long action swap setups, thinking 338 fed or 358 win in short and 35 Whelen or 338-06 in long action. Leaning toward 338 fed or 35 Whelen but they seem in short demand and not sure ammo will be easy to get. Anyone have a suggestion as which might be the easiest and best option? Not a reloaded and not in a hurry, just thinking and looking now. Thanks for any help or ideas.

I’d say, for anyone to do one of those should definitely be a reloaded. Those two were difficult to find when ammo was a plenty. Aside from that, I’d go 338 anyday.

Dave, agree with you on need to be a reloaded BUT, it’s a little late for this old man (76) to buy equipment and learn at this point.

Never too late my friend. ;) I get it though. You’d rather just shoot hogs!

Looked at current prices on ammoseek for 338 offerings from 338 Federal to 338 Mag, Lapua etc. $70-90 a box!! Hello?!

Well yeah. I’ve always thought an AR makes a fantastic Hog weapon. I guess it depends where you’re hunting them though.

Might have to put the 30-06 barrel on and get some 180 grain ammo and see what happens!

Since you don't reload, I'd suggest going with a cartridge that you can find locally and one that fits your budget.
Hog's aren't very hard to kill, it all comes down to shot placement. Any cartridge that will kill a deer will kill a pig. That said, the 338 Federal is a very good cartridge to go with.

why not common 150 gr 308 ?, from there 358 but the price goes up

338 Fed would be good. But 308/7.62x51 ammo everywhere right now. 300BLK, 7.62x39, 30-30, and 308 are my choices for pigs. 300BLK and 7.62x39 have the majority of kills.

OK, y’all are talking me out of a build- I already have 7mm-08 and 308 in short action barrels and 270, 25-06 and 30-06 barrels in long action plus a 7 mag. Guess l’ll save that money for more ammo! Thanks for advice.

Buy a case of 200 grain .358 Win. (https://greenacressporting.com/product/winchester-ammo-case-x3582-super-x-358-win-200-gr-power-point-pp-200-round-case-10-boxes-of-20-rounds/) Then come talk to me about a barrel. ;)

Been looking at bullets for 30-06 and 270, brother-in-law reloads and I do have a can of IMR 4350 that we used for some 270 when I had a Remington 7600 in 270.
