I'm aware of the MDT LSS and Oryx. There is the ultra-low budget Magpul Hunter and more expensive XLR Element. Am I missing anything? What has worked best in the lower cost range of chassis' for Savage rifles?

I just put my 700 7mm-08 into the Magpul Hunter and really like it. I bought it to use as a hunting stock and have nothing but good things to say. It doesn't feel that heavy, easy to install and screwed down rock solid, shoulders well, sits solid on bags when shooting from the bench, barrel free floats with plenty of clearance, supplied cheek rest was the correct height and length of pull was good straight from the box. Best thing was that groups went from 1 1/2" to less than 1" at 100 yards.
I'm just waiting on Magpul to make their hunter stock available for the Savage.

Those are the only lower cost Chassis unfortunately. They really start going up in price after those mentioned. XLR offers the Element 4.0. Comes with the stock for $650. MDT has the LSS-XL for like $530, NO stock or grip included. So it to would be over $600 with the addition of those components. The TAC21 for like $800, again NO stock or grip. Then there is the ESS with stock & grip for $1050, the ACC, also with stock & grip for $1300. And finally, the HNT26 for a whopping $1400...YIKES! KNS offers the 180-Alpha for like $769. There are MPA Competition Chassis for like $1075. The APO Saber chassis for $950. The Cadex which range from around $1400-$2000! And the new one I just got, replacing my TAC21 is the Mirage URL. It’s also almost $1300. There just aren’t any inexpensive options besides the Oryx & LSS. However, even the LSS at $430 does not come with Stock & Grip. So it ends up being more than $500 as well, at least! This really only leaves the Oryx as a complete chassis in the lower price range, for about $430.

Makes me wish I still had the milling machine and the stock of Aluminum bar stock in the shop.

I’ve thought about it. But quite honestly, a CNC is needed to correctly mill out for specific Actions.

https://savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=22599 Is this close to the magpul stock?

I haven't warmed up to the newest latest mdt look. And my old fashioned plastic FV .243 shot less than an 1" at 125yds over and over, and I don't think that one was bedded. Why I thought a newer model would make me a better shot was my mistake. Way out yardage may have been improved with a better stock. Our new range is 300yrds so I'll see how the 12 vlp does in a couple months.

I used a boyd's thumbhole stock on a stock 11 savage .243 once and that improved my shooting from the bench.

I didn’t list those... the GRS Warg runs about $730. It’s more of a stock though, All fiberglass/composite construction. Doesn’t use any kind of aluminum bedding block, which is the hallmark of a true “Chassis”. But they are nice.

FWIW I ran an Oryx for a while and really liked it. Very solid from the bench or prone, good ergos and great fit for the action- very solid and accurate.

Not really a chassis, but neither is the Magpul - the last time I looked the Pro-Mag Archangel was the best priced stock out there with removable mags. Unfortunately, they only accept Pro-Mag's proprietary magazines. Fortunately they come with a magazine and the mags are fairly inexpensive. I have two of them - one with a 6.5 CM and the other in 308 and they seem to work just as well as my $700 MDT chassis with $80 a pop mags, for a fraction of the price. Even less than the Magpul stock by about $100.

To my eye, they look better with an interesting camo paint job, but they aren't embarrassingly ugly as manufactured. If I were to paint one of mine, I think I would reduce the size and the profile of the "golf ball" lump in the pistol grip.

I think you answered your own question in the first sentence.

I just did a Bighorn Origin in a MDT LSS. I got it before the new year price increase. Paid 399 plus freight. Probably have another $120 in buttstock and grip. This is a savage magnum contour cut to 17”. With the scope and empty magazine it’s 8.5lbs. It’s a well manufactured chassis, I wish they would come up with the same layout but with about 1# less aluminum. There are some carbon fiber/aluminum hybrids but they are super expensive. This is the first chassis I’ve done. Probably the last.

Yes, the MDT HNT26 is Carbon Fiber/Aluminum. And it’s really light. It’s being advertised as the “Hunter’s Chassis”. But at $1400, it’s out of budget for many. The only reason I was able to get my Mirage URL, is I happened upon their Christmas SUPER sale!

OpticsPlanet has exclusive TRYBE Defense chassis system for $329 that uses AICS pattern mags. With typical 10% coupons they running most of the time, will be under $300.

Except for one review posted on YouTube by The Daily Shooter a week ago and subjective reviews on OpticsPlanet's website itself, I am not able to find more information.

Oryx.
The Magpul stick isn't available for Savage yet but I got one for my Ruger Predator and absolutely love it.

MDT/Oryx is also coming out with their new 'Field Stock' sometime this year for I think the same price as the Magpul. https://oryxchassis.com/copy-of-oryx-beisa-precision-rifle-chassis/

Now that one has my attention!! Great price and it doesn't look like a hunk of aluminum.

Interesting.
It has an aluminum mount for the action and a molded stock cutting the weight significantly.
The Oryx site shows a price of 299.95 until you select a rifle and choose a color (black is the only option) - then the price goes to $429.95.
A little bit of bait and switch to get your attention?
Nevertheless, it looks like a nice stock, and I like the stock drop behind the receiver instead of the straight aluminum bar on the Oryx chassis.

I have two Orxy chassis and I love them. Got both of mine for 399.99 but bought the stock extender package and shared one pack between the two chassis.
Both fit me perfectly with the extenders.
I did have to switch to high scope rings to accommodate the lack of a drop behind the receiver.
I had the same problem with my Les Baer Super Varmint AR with the recoil tube eliminating any stock drop.

The Oryx I added to my 6.5mm CM 12 FV eliminated the stock flex and improved the accuracy of the groups by about 10%.
The results are documented on a 2020-21 thread on this forum.
I also put an Oryx chassis on my .223 12FV to get a detachable mag.
The 1/2-inch block in the hidden mag for the .233 length cartridges in a SA frame made it difficult to get heavy bullets into the hidden mag when I seated them out to minimize jump. My old fingers just wouldn't let me do it easily.
The results are also documented on several threads on this forum.

Has anyone noticed the OP is MIA?

That Trybe Chassis is pretty nice. SUPER affordable. Not the greatest looking by any means, but will accommodate anyone not able to afford the more expensive options. Kinda like with scopes, LOL!

The Oryx “Classic look” is nice as well. Should appeal to those looking for more of a traditional stock. Not my preference, but that is the fret thing with so many options. People like different styles.

CFJunkie, I actually prefer the more “inline” chassis. Sure, the scope needs to up higher, but I prefer that as well, because I like using an adjustable cheek rest. Reason I made one for the shoulder stock I already made, Lol! I think it came out nice. Too bad I’m selling the whole chassis..LOL!

Dave,

I normally prefer to have the scope closer to the barrel, but when you choose NightForce Benchrest scopes with 56mm front optics, that isn't going to happen.
The NightForce sits high enough on the 6.5mm CM Oryx chassis to clear the front optic and then some.
It was an easier fit for the Leupold 45X Competition scope on the .223 12 FV Oryx that only has a 45mm front optic.

But that said, I have had great results with the Oryx chassis, and I am not complaining.
I switch back and forth between my Oryx 12 FV 6.5mm CM and my 12 LRP 6.5mm CM with a HS Precision Stock and have no problem with either. They both shoot about the same.
I also switch back and forth between my Oryx .223 12 FV and my CZ 527 and have no problem with either of them. The Savage just shoots better.
I guess it really doesn't matter to me now that I have both fitted to the stock and to my positioning.
The only thing I was complaining about was that I had to buy another set of rings when I switched to the Oryx chassis to get the scopes up high enough to get a comfortable cheek rest.
The lower rings were too low to get comfortable, even with the cheek rest at the minimum level.

Ahh, good stuff. :thumb:

CFJunkie, I hear ya partner. I know what you mean with the bigger objective scopes. I actually prefer 50mm. Like everything else, the objectives keep getting bigger & bigger.
