Hello all I'm trying to find a picture of a 26" McGowan savage varmint contour barrel. I can't seem to find one out there. I was considering that for my next build. Thank you
Has anyone had good luck with a light palma down to 26-27".

I have a factory Savage 26" Varmint profile barrel on my new 110 Varmint 223. It's a pretty hefty tube, with the accustock, the rig weighs just over 10lbs before mounts and glass.

I can grab a picture of that if it'd help.

Well which do you want...a Savage Varmint or Light Palma contour?

This is my Shilen, but it’s the Savage Varmint. I’m pretty sure they are the same

The Varmint contour is nice. It’s .800” diameter @ 26” I believe. Pretty heavy , as you can see next to a stock sporter. However, I am planning on a Heavy Palma barrel next.

I have a 26” McGowen measuring 0.70” at the muzzle so a picture would look a lot like Dave H’s. At 0.70” it’s plenty heavy.

I am rebarreling my 7 stw. Have a pile of rounds thru a spaghetti sporter, accuracy went in the toilet. I want a good stiff 26-27" barrel. That's why I thought the varmint or the palma. The palma might be better if I have to carry it a bunch. I usually get to a vantage point and setup over crp or on a hilltop and wait out the game. So weight isn't a super big deal.

Yes, if carrrying you want to strip weight where you can. My rig is bench rifle. It’s NOT at all light! I’d say keep it around the .700” range. There is a contour called a “Bull Sporter” which is .700” @ the muzzle. I’d look at that.

Or, if you want to spend more money have the larger contour barrel fluted. :)

I thought about but not to seriously yet.

I plan to use Mc Gowan's #6 "light Target" barrel, .750 at the muzzle for my 110L 6mm conversion.
I checked several of my target rifles in the safe and they were in the .800-.810 range so I decided to go with a muzzle dia. around .700-.750 thinking that for a paper puncher/varmint rifle that would be around the best.

I went with a 28" .700 mcgowan #5. I figured a 8.5 twist will work a little better for the 175s I have for the stw. Now just the wait

It’s McGowan.... I’m CERTAIN you will be quite happy with the purchase.

If they work half as good as my last xcaliber barrel. I will be a happy man

This will be my first McGowan. I have shot several E R Shaw barrels and they have been above average so I'm hoping for the best.
Dave Hoback, thanks for the positive comment on the McGowan's.

Oh, of course. My pleasure. ER Shaw are typically very good barrels...many times they will shoot better than factory. That said, they are production class barrels. McGowan is in the top tier alongside Shilen, Douglas, Bartlien, Brux, etc., & etc., & so on. People typically have their favorite flavor however, my opinion is one these top tier can be chosen at random, from a hat, and produce an exceptional shooter.
