At one time there was a thread about altering a 3 screw trigger using a lighter /smaller diameter spring for the weight of pull spring. there was a specific spinning bait referenced as a source of lighter weight spring wire. thx in adv

I used a Buzz Bait from Walmart. You can make one from piano wire (.040”) I believe.

I also brought my calipers when I purchased the lure so I could be sure that the wire was of adequate size.

Measure the stock spring. Amazon you can get spring wire in nearly any thickness. But then, I guess the lure would work.

It was the Buzzbait lure. Like this. https://www.lurenet.com/booyah-buzz-bait

It's in the Gunsmithing section of the FAQ, bottom of write-up under "Additional Notes" - Factory 3-Screw Trigger Adjustment Procedures (http://www.savageshooters.com/content.php?130-Factory-3-Screw-Trigger-Adjustment-Procedures)

"2. The pull weight spring wire can be replaced with common piano wire measuring 0.040 to 0.045" in diameter rather than or in addition to backing off the adjustment screw to achieve a lighter weight."

Measured the stock spring = 0.068/0.070" Error when measured in place. ACtually .058"

Going to .040" would be a definite improvement. :thumb:

Indeed. Will be quite a difference.

Not trying to be argumentative but I don't remember any of the factory torsion springs being .058". The .040" spring does work but I'm not sure of the tempering since most of that wire sold on amazon is piano wire. It is very critical when setting the trigger using any size wire is to have enough preload on the spring to where the trigger is pushed against the sear. Anything less and you will fire on bolt close or you may have an accidental firing. Good luck.

Robin brings up a good point. Any spring wire sold comes in the annealed state. It must be heat treated to spring temper. Pretty easy, but not for everyone. Something like the fishing lure has already been spring tempered, so it’s ok.

I have modified several of the old 3 screw triggers by using the overtravel screw as the pull weight adjustment. It is the screw forward of the safety adjustment screw. A 9/64(.140625) inch drill bit will remove enough of the threads to insert an extractor spring inside(.140 outside diameter. A short set screw will serve as the adjustment screw. The spring adjustment is similar to the rifle basics sav-1 or the Timney replacement. Some of the 3screw triggers had a roll pin to hold the wire spring. This should be removed. Other triggers have a place for the spring molded in when the trigger was castor pressed on the powderedetalersios. This powdered metal end can be sneaked and then cut off with a hacksaw or sawsall, then ground or filedxsmooth with a file or dremmel tool. The trigger now has three adjustments. Sear, pull weight and safety stop. These can be adjusted easily to 2 pounds or less and make a nice trigger after adjustment. The drill is to allowed movement of the coil spring within the threads of re old tapped hole. I've done several of these and really likecthem.
