Got my first model 1899 about 6 weeks ago. Always liked the looks of them, and this one said take me home. She is 1899C sn 218xx, 1901 dom.
Don't know if the barrel length is original, 20", not the listed 26, but the muzzle looks right (special order?). Has a replacement butt stock that is not right, flat "cheeks" at the receiver like an H? model. Waiting on a letter from the museum to find out what details they can give me. Has an extra dovetail cut right at the SAV 303 stamp in front of the receiver. No "Model 1899" stamp to be found on the barrel, just address and pat dates. Interesting little detail - there is a"DFAC Arlington VA" stamp very small just ahead of the fore end, bottom of the barrel. I saw a photo of a sporterized MHG rifle with the same. Looks like my old "Grey Lady" ( I won,t call her a grey rat, age deserves respect) may have been north of the border. 1899 and 99s are not plentiful up here in NW AR, and inflation hurts. 2 boxes of ammo helped the deal. Will post pix when I figure out how to got them from the camera to here.
