An old friend just gifted me a savage 110 chambered in 30.06 serial number 41724. Can anyone tell me anything about this gun?

It should be a heck of a lot fun to shoot is about all I can tell you. Congratulations!

IMO: Heck of a lot of fun to watch someone else shoot it.

Does it have a letter prefix before the numbers?

With a 5 digit serial number it's a pre-66 model, see the 110-Series forum (covers ALL 110 series rifles) for more info. If you post there I can help you ID year of manufacture.

There should be a date code on the barrel. Look for an oval stamp with 1 or 2 numbers followed by a letter. The letter indicates the year.
K == 1959
L == 1960
M == 1961
N == 1962
P == 1963
R == 1964

They skipped O and Q.

For 110s manufactured prior to Gun Control Act of 1968, the letters started with "I" which was 1957. Dating the early 110s has been covered many times in the correct forum as I previously indicated.

With that serial number, it isn't going to be a 1957/1958 rifle, so I started it at 1959. Sales numbers indicate it's probably a 1963/1964 rifle, so I went up to there.

Since the date codes work for almost all Savage/Stevens firearms from 1949 to 1970, it seemed appropriate to post the answer here in the Vintage Firearms forum.

Guess it doesn't matter since OP hasn't logged in since asking his question.

There is a 10P in an oval stamp on the barrel, so it is a 1963?

Yep. We were told those date stamps were put on pretty late in the assembly process, so it should be the date the rifle was assembled.
