Can anyone tell me how much weight I will pic up if I go from a Savage 24" .223 varmint taper barrel. To a 28" (or 26" if 28 will be to much) Shilen Bull Barrel in 6BR? My gun weighs 15 lbs on my bathroom scale, needs to stay under 17 .lbs with new barrel.

racinready300ex,

I don't have the exact answer. But here is a piece of info that might help. I happen to have a factory Savage 24" .223 varmint barrel laying around. It weighs 4.5 lbs.

I have just received my barrel, although not the same, it may help you out. My new model 111 in 7mmmag with a 24" barrel weighs right at 8lbs. My new McGowan 26" stainless varmint barrel (0.800" at the muzzle) weighs 5lbs. My quess is that you are going to be over your weight limit with a bull barrel (1.00" at the muzzle)

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll be over weight. I think I'll just get the 26", and shoot in the heavy class untile I figure out how the cut some weight. I could switch to a weaver T36 scope and cut 9 oz. And I could probably take some weight out of the stock too.

It may be close, I was guessing the 26" barrel would be around 6. lbs, based on LG's barrel weighting 4.5 lbs, that would be a gain of 1.5 lbs on my 15 lbs puts me right at the line. But, that's assuming a 6 lbs barrel and that my bathroom scale is accurate ::)

Considering that a 24" varmint taper barrel (1.055" at the shank and 0.835" at the muzzle) with a .224" bore weighs 4.5 lbs, here you go some calculated weight estimates for a bull barrel (no taper) with a 6mm/.243" bore:

26" - 6 lb 1 oz
28" - 6 lb 9 oz

These are just estimates. They could be off by a couple of ounces for I disregarded any differences in chamber volumes. Also there could be differences in steel density.

Thanks LG.

I think I'll go with the 26" and then at the 1st shoot I go to I'll have to get them to wieght it before I tell them what class I'm going to shoot in. Sound like it will be just under and keep me in light gun. But, it really comes down to how accurate my bathroom scale is. ???
