Hi everyone new to the forum. I just bought a 12FV in 6.5 creedmoor today. My question is can I change it to accept a magazine instead of the blind mag. I’m located in Canada.

Will take a new stock with bottom metal, or just put it in a chassis system...like an Oryx.

Welcome. The short answer is yes, but, you probably have to change the stock and bottom hardware. Not an inexpensive proposition.

I put an Oryx chassis (from Canada) on my 12 FV.
The chassis was a drop in with no mods necessary and resulted in the barrel that was free back to the receiver.
The aluminum chassis eliminated any flex from the factory plastic chassis (the factory stock didn't have an aluminum stiffener).

The only thing you need to watch is the capability of different AICS mags to accommodate O.A.L.
The mag that Oryx sells is plastic and the thicker material takes away about 0.1 inches of O.A.L. compared to the aluminum mags.
That gets to be an issue as your chamber depth erodes. I have about 3,000 rounds down the barrel and it has eroded about 0.036 so the AICS mag length becomes and issue for the long pointy 6.5 CM bullets if you are trying to maintain a specific jump as the barrel erodes. The Savage hidden mag has much more internal mag length than the AICS mags.

Yes, using an AICS one must be conscious of OAL over time. However, let’s be honest.... this is only an issue for paper punching ultimate groups. I know I always single load when I’m working up loads for accuracy. And when you already have a Sub MOA, Sub 1/2MOA..maybe even Sub 1/4MOA rig, a bit more Jump due to magazine obedience, won’t turn your rifle into a 3” grouping AK47 overnight.:becky:

On another note...I’d think at 3K rounds, the rifle could definitely stand a new barrel.

I would have thought that too, but my results don't show it.
Other than monitoring the average group accuracy or erosion in the lands, how would you recommend how I determine if the barrel needed to be changed.

My load averages with this rifle are just as good as they were when the barrel had well under 1,000 rounds.
The throat has now eroded 0.036.
This barrel, when new, had a cartridge base to lands measurement just about right on specs for SAAMI O.A.L.
I have kept the jump about the same as the throat eroded (0.010 to 0.020) by seating bullets out further as the throat eroded.

In my first Savage .308 (2008 vintage), I noticed deterioration in group sizes at around 6,000 rounds after 0.090 erosion in the throat. That rifle came from the factory with a long chamber (0.080 longer than specs. and I attributed the sudden drop in accuracy to the bullets being seated out so far 0.0170) that I was losing neck tension consistency since I also seated out further and further as the throat eroded.)
Within 100 rounds of 6,000 I started to notice a loss in average group accuracy and it only proceeded to get worse. By 6,500 rounds, group sizes had grown by 30% so it was very obvious.

Sorry....I wasn’t clear. I meant it from the same standpoint as getting “ultimate” groups. So, more of a competition thinking. Building a rifle that achieves consistent 1/4moa, is not going to produce those same groups at 3000rds. But it may still do 3/8”...or 1/2”... However, to a top performer that simply is not acceptable. Ya know? On the other hand, a rifle doing 1moa can very well maintain that same 1moa for several thousands of rounds.

I’ve seen more than one old, worn rifle, with many, many thousands of rounds, still produce 1.5moa with consistency. I’m not involved in any firearms competition. I shoot for fun.(very seldom anymore). My constant focus is not chasing 1/4moa anymore. So I don’t worry about round count.... or even keeping track of throat erosion. Personally, I base barrel changing on not being able to hit the target I’m after.

Got your drift, and you are probably right but based on the throat erosion and still being able to maintain a jump that works well in a 26-inch barrel, I don't think I am ready to spend the money to replace the barrel.

My 12 FV in 6.5mm CM has averaged 0.342 for 5-round groups for all the groups I have shot with it.
That is a combined average for all powders, bullets, seating depths and jumps.

The last several sessions produced loads that made it into the top 25 loads that now average 0.285.
I would say that it indicates is still shooting as well as it ever has.
Granted, my shooting skills are probably the limiting factor in achieved accuracy, but since I can't see the difference yet, I guess, for me and my capabilities, it hasn't worn out yet.

The mag fits nice its not expensive and its pillar beded . It has a carbon fiber polymer blend synthetic composition . It balances real well . It has a cheek riser adjustment . Length of pull adjustment . For me its a perfect fit . And I think it looks awesome . Its by far the best value for the money IMHO . It works with top or bottom bolt release . And two sizes 4.4 or 4.25 action bolt spacing on the same stock thanks to ingenious engineering .

The simple answer is yes. I went the conservative approach Accurate Mag for the Detachable mag and housing. I ordered a Boyds Pro Varmit Stock. I had to open the inlet up on the bottom meta and open the barrel channel as well. The mag well was sorta close the barrel channel needed some more time intensive work. I finally got to shoot in the new scope as well and with no pillars or other work the accuracy seemed as good or better than the flexible factory stock.
