Been off for a few weeks but busy on the Smithin' bench. I think most on here
have experienced the infamous "fatal error". I have seen at least a half dozen
drive failures, or the blue screen death of Ram.....I was in the middle of a
forum explore when everything shut down. Did the normal cold boot, and "NADA"
Back up drive was able to kick in but only in safe ( slow ) mode. So it begins
again !! Got the old guy runnin' on the back up just enough to check mail and
forum text with an old FireFox browser. In the mean time, a PC shop here in Erie
I know very well, is building me a custom 10 machine, and getting set up with a
T-Mobile 5G gateway router.....We'll just call this my next wild cat.....LOL

My boy mentioned something about that also. I'll get with the guy's
doing the work, and see about any other irritants need gone. So far
there has been problems with loading legacy engineering software
that runs good in Win 7 that was carried over from XP. May forego
10 and just use 7.

When my 7 machine goes, I will be going to a version of UBUNTU.

Create an image of your Win7 installs, or get the image from MS Windows and run a virtual machine instance of it on a newer/faster computer. That way you can continue using the legacy programs indefinitely.

Better yet, make an disc image of the running system. I use https://www.easeus.com/ but there are other freebies out there. I store the images (I have three boxes) on an external one TB HD drive. If one of the drives crash and burn 15-20 minutes later with a spare HD I'm up and running. The most I'll loose is when I made the image(s) which at the most is a month's worth.

+1 to Bills point.

That's what I was trying to explain, but the "from scratch" scenarios were what I found to illustrate the VM option.

I was also making the assumption that the hard drive AND/OR entire system crapped out.. Which was using the approach to continue using the image, except on a new, faster, more reliable system.

I'm actually going to upgrade to a NAS for my home that has the capability of storing and executing legacy VM's so I was picturing "porting" the old Win 7 image to the new NAS VM.

All to say there are a LOT of ways to skin that cat.. main thing, is to have a backup of your image as Bill suggested, how you use it is full of options.

Back in business.....With a little bit of a twist, we got the old Micron back
up with a old Seagate and went back to the last version of XP to run my
engineering software. With the addition of more antiquated ram lying
around in the store room, It's running great. Better then when new.

The new Win 10 system is finished and will be home today. Yesterday I
went over to drop off the T-Mobile wireless gateway for them to do a
general test and add any changes necessary. Less of a headache on my
part.

The switch from 7 to 10 really isn't that big of a change to adapt to - not like it has been in the past with previous generations of Windows. Biggest thing to get used to is the changes to the start menu and how things are presented, and that only takes a day or two to get accustomed to.

Well for right now I'll be doing all my web work on the new system. Getting an average of 175 mbs
on my T-Mobile gateway, with 235 mbs on startup this morning. I'm line of site to a tower about
1/2 mile away, and on startup, it searches for the fastest server. I'm in Erie Pa. and it seems to be
using servers in the lower Michigan region. So all in all.... You can have a fast wireless but still
dependent on the server output.

Definitely beat's Spectrum's hard line speed. I'm lucky to get 24 mbs download on a good day (supposed to be up to 40 mbs), and my upload is typically in the 2-3 mbs range. Unfortunately they're basically the only game in town, and I'm not willing to give them another $50-60/month to "upgrade" to a higher speed plan when I'm typically not getting 1/2 the speed I'm currently paying for.

I'm paying $65 a month for T-Mobile's home gateway and no data cap.
