I posted this in the medium game hunting section but figured it'd fit here too.

I'm trying to set up a hog hunt for myself and a couple of friends. I have a Savage 16fss in 300 wsm and another makers gun in 243 Win and want to take a hog with each rifle.

For the 243 I have some Nosler 90gr Ballistic Tip ammo and some Winchester 100gr Power Points. Are these bullets good for a broadside shot on a hog? The hunt will likely take place near a feeder so I doubt the shots will be from long distance.

The reason for asking is that I've read mixed reports online about BT bullets and would like to hear from some who have first hand experience with them.

TIA

The Ballistic Tips are great for thin skinned critters. Hogs need a more solid bullet for better penetration. The power points or a Sierra Game King soft point or anything similar should work fine.

I haven't used those bullets but have taken a few hogs with 87 gr Hornady BTHPs in handloads and have had no problems anchoring one. It also works well on our Georgia deer. Shots here are rarely beyond 100 yards.

I would not use a BT for hogs, IMHO, a PT or AccuBond would be far better choices from Nosler.

Thanks for your replies. I'll keep looking for tougher ammo. If all else fails I'll just use the 100gr Power Points in the 243 and 180 fusions in the 300 wsm.

I've killed around 60 hogs. My hunting partner has killed quite a few more than that. We've used 5.56, 6.8, 300 blackout, 308, and 338 federal. All the hunting has been at night in Texas or South Carolina. It all depends on how you are hunting. Any bullet in the brain or in the neck just behind the head will put them down so if you're just shooting one in the group, go with what you have. If you are trying to shoot running pigs after the first shot, you'll need more horsepower. I shoot them with the cheapest 150 softpoint I can find. It does amazingly well on pigs up to 300 lbs. We've never shot anything over 300-325 so....

I doubt I'll be shooting at running hogs. Will probaly be able to take my time before shooting. I think I'll take Alleycat72's advice and wait for a clean head/neck shot with what I already have.

I would use Barnes for hogs.

I met a guy at the range the other day and he collected my 300 wsm brass to reload for me. He's going to load 20 rounds of 150gn Hornady Interlock and 20 rounds of 165gn Interlock for it.

He said he'd be happy to load some 243 for me also. About the only medium/big game hunting bullets I can find are 100gn btsp Interlocks. Would they be alright on hogs? I also have 3 boxes of factory loaded Federal 100gn Power Shok.

What are your thoughts about the loads for the 243 on hogs? Would the Interlock or Power Shok work for a shoulder shot? The pigs may be up to 200lbs max but most likely smaller.

Cheap works well for me. Most any cup and core bullet from any of the manufacturers will work fine. Heck Ive even flat steamrolled them with Wolf and Tula hollowpoints in 123gr 7.62x39 that were $5 a box and bulk pack 55gr softpoints in .223 . I usually have preferences for good hunting bullets for most game species with accubonds being my favorites, but pigs just get blasted with whatever and it always does the trick. After dozens of pigs I'm starting to think maybe I've just been "premium bullet" brainwashed all these years.
