I'm considering settling up a hog hunt for myself and a couple of friends. I have a Savage 16fss in 300 wsm and another brand rifle in 243 win. I intend to try to take a hog with each rifle.

My question is about ammo for the 243. I have 90gr Nosler ammo loaded with their Ballistic Tips and some Winchester Power Point 100gr.

As far as I can tell the hunt would be around a feeder so I imagine shots would be fairly close. Would the loads I have for the 243 be sufficient if I took a broadside shot? I have no doubt either would work for a neck or ear shot.

I ask because I've read mixed reviews about the BT bullets online and would like to hear from someone with first hand experience with them.

I just took a nice razorback hog in a GA swamp earlier this year with my 243win. I was using a stiff charge of H4831sc under a 95 grain Nosler Combined Technology (CT) bullet... they look like Winchester factory ballistic silvertips basically, and the bullet performed just like you would want. Shot the thing right behind the ear from about 40 yards, and found the bullet on the other side right below the skin, mushroom'd out nicely with pretty much full weight retention. It was down instantly, right where I shot it. Of course I chambered another round just as fast as I could work the bolt, but it didn't need it. It kicked for a bit, but that was it then. I had them flying right about 2,900fps out of my Tikka T3 Lite which is a short, 22" and change sporter barrel of course. But these have worked just as well on deer too.

I took this hog with 100 gr Sierra BT, (243) at about 2650; 175 yards. Seriously no problem. This year I'm loading 90gr Nosler Accubond at about 2700fps. I expect no issues. Shot placement.
