If I bought a 110C in .270 could it be changed to a .338-06 by changing the barrel? Also can this rifle be changed to a .338 Mag or will it not handle a magnum round with modification? I can get a good deal on a 110C in .270, problem is that I already have a .270 and would like to buy the savage and convert it to another round. I am looking to get into an elk round or something that will work on african plains game. Can I change it to a .416 Rigby? LOL... Thanks for you feedback.

The 338-06 is just a barrel away and a great caliber. A 338 mag would need a barrel, bolt head, and magazine. I don't think a 416 Rigby is going to happen, but you could do a 416 Ruger with a barrel, bolt head, and magazine swap. The Ruger is right there with factory Rigby ballistics. If you run the Rigby a little hotter it will out run the Ruger by a pretty good amount.

The .338-06, .35 Whelen will do the job on plains game. Another good one would be the .375 Ruger. How about a hybrid like the .338-375, .35-.375?

Yep yep yep, you can do whatever you want but the Rigby and 375 H+H etc.
take a longer hole in the bottom of the action and a longer mag.
The Taylor runs 3.75" and I think it would come close to running in a RUM action
375 H+H is 3.6" I believe and the longest I can run is 3.4"
458 lott is also 3.6"

My ejection port is long enough to eject 3.6" as is.

I had this long action set up with all sort of rounds.
30-06, 338-06, 375 ruger, 338/284 (short action).
Now it lives as a 458 winmag for a while.

I have read about people opening up the bottom hole with a dremel and attaching a long mag to the stock
to get to RUM length.
Think I would rather have it professionally done.

These rifles you can do almost anything you want to except maybe the 338 Lapua.
That one is right on the edge of safety.

The 375 ruger and 416 ruger are both long action cartridge and will run through the standard action.
The 375 ruger is a really nice round.

Thanks for all the input. I am a newby to this modding game. I want to be able to hunt cape buffs with the rifle. .375 is the smallest caliber legal for them, so I am told. I do not reload, but have friends who do and can get what I need from them as long as I come up with the dies. I have been looking for a good commercial round also and the .375 ruger or .416 ruger might be the direction to go. If you guys are willing i'd like to ding on you for some help on how to attack the project. Assuming I go with one of the rounds above what all do I need and where do I go to get it. I make custom knives and am very mechanically inclined, so I am confident I can complete this project, I just need someone to walk me down the path the first time. Thanks for any assistance.
