I am looking at a for sale 112 model long action 223 made in the 90s. Any idea what that twist rate would be? Ive read both 9 and 14. Guy selling it doesn't know.

Easiest way to find out is to use a cleaning rod with a jag and patch.
Insert it into the rifling, mark the cleaning rod at the back of the receiver along with making a mark near the handle. Push the cleaning rod into the barrel until the rod has made a complete rotation, then mark the cleaning rod at the back of the receiver again.
Finish pushing the cleaning rod / patch through the bore, remove the cleaning rod and then measure the distance between the marks. If it's close to 9 inches, it's a 1-9 twist - If it's close to 14, then it's a 1-14 twist.

Well I was hoping to avoid an unnecessary trip, an awkward let me shove this rod down it and try to get a good tight patch spin, only to say no thanks too slow and head back home :D

It could be a 1-9", 1-12", or a 1-14".......depending on which year it was made in the '90's. Starting in '95 they were all 1-9" twist.

Try starting here: http://www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?60032-Dating-Serial-Numbers-with-a-Letter-Prefix.
Then ask the seller for the relevant characters of the SN and update your post with the year of manufacture.
Maybe that will be enough for a definitive answer (if the year corresponds to a “one rate for 223” period.)
Unfortunately, the forum’s collection of heritage catalogs is missing the 90’s.
Otherwise, steel yourself for “awkward” :)

I have a Savage model 12 BVSS in .223 Rem the twist rate is 1 in 9. It shoots very well with 75 gr Hornady match bullets.

The one I had was a 1 in 12". Shot 52 grain Sierra Match Kings like a Laser.
