Can you get along with a standard or do you need to get the special bolt head? Any extraction problems with the standard?

You will need the bolt head specific for that cartridge. Extraction is not your
only problem. Off center primer strikes is a concern especially with a sloppy
chamber.

When I installed My 6.5 Grendel barrel, I left the 308 bolt face on for a while, and it never failed to operate. Later I got the 7.62x39 bolt face from Gun Shack, but they don’t show it listed now. Any stock Savage bolt head can and often does have off center firing pin strikes. This has been a problem for Me with Small Rifle primers. The firing pin hits too far to one side, the anvil is not contacted properly, and you get a fail to fire. I have put on safety gear, removed the primer, put it on a steel plate, smacked it with a hammer, and the primmer fired. The fix for this is to have the bolt head bushed and the firing pin turned to match. I will eventually have this done to all My bolt heads, when I can give them up for a while. Maybe when I run out of powder and primers :o.

This is has been My experience, it may not be the same for everyone, Good Luck

Serval makers have it in bolt guns. CZ, Howa, and Ruger, come to mind.
A lot like a 30/30 with a pointed bullet.

Could possibly open up a .223 bolt head and machine the extractor,
but may be simpler just to go to "Pacific Tool and Gauge"

If you choose to buy at PT&G, purchase the PPC bolt head.

If you purchase a PTG bolt head , what extractor would you use? Are the 223 and 308 extractors the same?

Good question, I believe it is the standard and where i would start. Maybe Fred will chime in that.
