a friend called me and said he found 17 ammo at walmart tonight. I shoot a Savage A17 and usually buy 17HMR rounds. will this winchester 17 ammo fit my gun?

That would really depend on what kind of 17 ammo it is. Lots of different 17 caliber cartridges out there...

.17 Remington
.17 Remington Fireball
.17 HMR
.17 Mach 2
.17 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM)

Only one you can use in your rifle is .17 HMR.
