As the title states, unfortunatly I live in California and need to use copper for hunting. I just purchased a Savage model 99 in a vintage gun store on Thursday and am trying to work up a load, using re formed 308 brass for the 300 Savage cartridge with 150 grain Hornady gmx bullets and hogdon 4895. I've seen suggested loads between 37 and 39.5 grains of powder, and further misfortune finds that 300 sav is unobtanium locally and we can't order ammunition online here. So I'm kinda stuck.

Anyone have any thoughts on loading 300 sav, such as bullet seat depth and throat length? I've only ever loaded for 30-06 before, which is why I have 150 grain gmx bullets and h 4895 on hand.

Give Hornady a call, they might be able to help.

I haven't loaded copper in my 300 but I have used Barnes bullets for years. All copper bullets like a lot of jump or at least out of my rifles. I would load up some at set them at magazine length. I'm betting they will shoot just fine.

I might just give that a try, I've always had a hard time getting someone knowledgeable on the phone from them though, and do t expect it to be much better with what's going on right now in the world.

Check LoadData.com. For a minimal charge per year they list loads for all kinds of cartridges, powders and bullets. They have a ton of .300 Savage loads in their database.
