I have an urge to build a 1:8 twist 22 cal with a 24”-26” tube for coyotes and other varmints, once I locate a donor action. I’m thinking a vanilla 22-243 as I have a ton of 243 brass with no current use. My other thought was a 22CM, but not much for reloading components currently available. Looking for input on a couple things:
- any real advantage in one cal over the other?
- looking for advise on a 75-80 grain bullet that will give bang-flops on yotes out to 600 yds?
- not real concerned about barrel life but would 3400-3500 (tel:3400-3500) be attainable in the 24” tube without really heating it up?
Thanks

Mmm
I’m stuck on .223 77gn smk

But sounds like you want some serious speed.
A light .243 bullet or a 40gn bullet in a .223

If you can resize your brass and have time to get load data and test and have components.
Awesome.

Those wild cat loads are interesting.

Every think .224 Valkyrie or what ever it is?

Edit: please ignore the following, I thought you said you were looking at lighter bullets.

Looking at some ballistics data a heavy bullet will have less drop and more energy on target at the longer ranges.

.220 Swift 52gn SMK at 3829 muzzle vel. 600yd 1492fs and 257ftlb energy
.220 Swift 40gn VMax MV4199 @600 1332 158
.223 Rem 77gn SMK MV2750 @600 1548 410

This kinda surprised me, but, there it is. I shoot my .223 at 600yd quite a bit and it remains better than MOA at that range as long as I dope the wind right.

Don't know what kind of vel you could get with a higher cap .22 cartridge with the heavier bullets, but, you'd probably have to use a twist rate suitable to the longer bullets.

Kinda surprised me

I wonder if anybody ever got the bright idea of necking up the swift case to 6mm? lol

Either one will work just fine.
I chose the 22 CM when I built my ARC Nucleus action a few years ago. I'm running a 20" 1-8 twist X-Caliber barrel shooting 75gr A-Max & ELD-M bullets, using necked down Starline 6mm CM brass. I'm getting right at 3500 fps out of it.

Just know that barrel life isn't long with either of these cartridges. Plan on it to start opening up groups at 800 - 1000 rds. I ordered two barrel's when I planned building mine.
I love this rifle, it shoots excellent, and is fun as hell hunting yotes and pigs with.

Sounds to me like your looking for a 22-250.

And nice rifle Txhillbilly.....

I'm going to put together a carry around coyote/ground hog rifle on a LH mdl 11 action. The barrel will be here today, it's a 22-250 Shilen SS select match, 24", 1-12 twist. I chose the 1-12 because that's what my FVSS is and I have several boxes of the Sierra 55 gr Gamekings it likes. If needed I can shoot 62 or possibly 65 gr bullets.

With a bunch of 243 brass, seems logical to go 22-243.

Similar to Txhillbilly, I built a 22CM (chose a 10 series action) and also went with an 8T X-Caliber barrel in varmint contour and 26". I necked down new Nosler 6CM brass and am getting an average of 3450fps with 41gr H4350 with 77gr Nosler CC and Sierra SMK.

Thanks!

The 22 CM and 22-243 have more case capacity than the 22-250. Higher velocities = Better ballistics.

If you want some serious speed just build a 243 and us 58 gr hornady bullets I get over 4000 FPS

Thanks for the input. I already have a 22-250 that shoots 55 vmax lights out but want to add a fast twist to the herd for heavier bullets.

I see 22CM brass available in both large and small primer pockets. Is there an advantage in one over the other?

I tried Peterson and Alpha 22 Creedmoor brass and couldn't get high velocities out of it before I was getting extreme pressures. It's great brass, but doesn't have as much capacity as Starline or Lapua 6mm Creedmoor brass that you can just neck down in a single pass through a full length sizing die.
Go with the Small primer brass, the primer pockets will last longer.

I use Whidden dies on mine.

I have good stock of small primers so good to hear. Interesting results with the brass. Thanks for the info.
