6.5X284 short action

I was wondering if anyone has put a 6.5x284 barrel on a small shank short action Savage? If so we’re there any significant problems that came up? If it can be done it would keep me from buying another stock. Thanks in advance.

I haven't, but considering the mag. length of the Savage allows you up to 3.00, it should work fine with 140 class and lighter bullets. I'm building a true .284 on a long action because I wanted to seat 162 ELD-X's at 3.10" but I could have built it on a short action too.

I built a 284 Win on a short action with PTG bottom metal. The longest COL I could load with MDT metal (no binder) mags was 2.95". Which was not quite long enough for 162s and not nearly long enough for ELDM 180s. I subsequently switched to a 110BA LA action and seat 180 ELDMs at 3.25".

A 6.5-284 may work ok in a short action as long as you're ok seating less than 3" COL, but it would not be optimal. Or if you want to single feed. :)

One wolf, I do plan on just shooting the 6.5x284 in F-class matches. So I’d be single feeding the rounds.

In that case You will be just fine. I shoot My Straight 284 Win in a short action, and I load as long as I want. All My actions are short, and I single feed everything.

What Grenguy said. Do you have that 6.5 barrel already ?? If not I'd just
go with the straight .284
