I have a Savage 12 action in an MDT chassis. It is a 300 WSM. The AICS mag length internally is 2.98”.

Rounds loaded longer than 2.945” oal don’t feed. Further inspection shows that the bullet tip gets caught under the action feed ramp. This also happens occasionally when a round slides forward under recoil.

The mag has to touch off under the action on the front side, or it won’t be stable.

I called MDT and they clarified the action needs cut for clearance, but were kind of vague about how and who could do it.

Anybody else having this issue? How did you handle it?

Short answer is. I use a sled, since I shoot my chassis rifles off the bench it hasn’t been enough of a PITA to fix yet. The main issue on my 300 win mag is that I built it on an old flat back blind mag Rifle and haven’t cut relief in the back of the receiver yet, your best bet may to trim it slowly with a dremel tool until it works.

Agreed my mod 12 in a MDT chassis needs to be ground out. I haven't done it yet because I've only shot off a bench and single feed it. If and when I take hunting it will have to be ground out. A Drexel tool and some patients should get it done.

Would like to better understand if I can screw up the feeding somehow.....that seems hard to do. I just don’t want to Dremel it into a paperweight. I’m also a bit concerned about flushing every chip out, but air and water should get it, I guess.

Of course that would be a good excuse to part it out and buy a Bighorn Origin which has to happen this year!

I did cut th action. It feeds a longer oal now. It is debatable if that is a good thing, but I wanted the bullets out further.

It fixes the real issue of tips trapped under the feed ramp. No feeding issues. Nice and smooth. Seems fixed.

Good job. You also could have run another magazine like a magpul which won't let the rounds slide under the action. Your cut will let you run longer oal rounds now if you want.
