So, I have an Axis .223 for two years now........In 1965 I purchased Savage 340 in .223, all I could afford back then, with warm handholds was my go rifle for deer, I know, it was a .223, 39 deer from '65 thru 2010, all one shot kills but for one on our farm land, passed the old Savage to my grandson after two dances with the "Angel of Death", I won, LOL.......Two years ago I decided to get back to deer hunting, still on the farm, now shooting and Axis, 4x Bushnell like my old rifle had, now using Barnes TSX factory rounds, two deer in the past two years, one shot kills..........I keep my shots under 125 yards.

What weight bullet do you use on deer with the 223?

I never heard of a 340. Are they a bolt gun?

Nosler 60gr Partition for hand holds, Barnes TSX for factory load, Federal makes a 62gr factory load for medium game hunting.

The Savage Model 340 bolt action was the first Savage ecno rifle, first made in 1950, first rifle to employ the barrel nut design from Savage. Some very good 340 info if you do a search.

Do a search for ".223 bullets for deer", tons of new info most tend to overlook.
