Hello Savage Shooters,

My name is Doug, I live on an island in Maine, and have been hunting since 1989. I went to Colorado School of Trades for gunsmithing in 1991, and I am now a carpenter / builder.

I own a 60's vintage Savage 99C, in 284 Win, which I was given years ago. It has a lot of sentimental value, and has a reputation as a lucky "one shot kill" hunting rifle. I shot my first deer, my first buck, my biggest buck, and my bull moose with it.

The problem is that I think the barrel is shot out - there is visible throat erosion, and it doesn't group the way it used to. Can anyone here direct me to information about having it rebarreled, authentically, in the same chambering?

Does Savage possibly do this?

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving, Doug

You can contact Savage customer service to see what they say. In the log run, you may have to have a good gunsmith rebarrel/chamber the 99 to the 284 caliber.

Yes, Doug. You can have your rifle re-barreled. I had a Savage model 16/116 .308 re-barreled to a 6.5 Creedmoor by a gunsmith. Savage has a custom shop, too.
I am a new guy, too.
