So
With the midwest states allowing straightwall ammo guns for deer hunting, is it possible to rebarrel a 99 to 350 legend or 450 bushmaster ?
Now, it goes against my nature to redo, alter, change these rifles.
But...
I do have a pitted metal, cracked stock, non factory drilled scope mounts, sling swivels, 300 savage donor that I would have no hurt feelings if it could be done rifle available.
Then, I would have the pleasure of using this rifle as intended, deer hunting.

What altercations other than the obvious barrel swap with headspacing would need done.
The 300 savage case base is larger than the 350 legend, but ,it is smaller than the 450 bushmaster.
What issues arise here?
The 450 bushmaster may not roll around the rotary mag, but I think the 350 would.

Has this been done yet ?

Then lastly,
Cost ?

Any help or helpful comments welcome.

Mods, feel free to move if this is in wrong category

Thanks

I wouldn't consider this an altercation.

My first question would be if the rotary mag would work with a straight wall case. You would certainly have to sculpt the rotor. Without a shoulder, would the cartridges in the mag behave? How do you feel about a single shot?

A lot of the rotors were cartridge specific. I once considered a switch barrel .303 Sav./ .38-55 1899 takedown, but the .38-55s would not feed or even load into the magazine. Then consider the bolt face alteration, if possible, and an extractor.

Sounds like you're getting a new rifle!! :)

My old friend and gunsmith, the late Howard Wolfe wouldnt even utter the word no.
He would just shake his head, and that was that. lol

Just read on the J E S Rifle Reboring website that he’s experimenting with 350 Legend. Maybe you could be a guinea pig.

Hello MonkeyMaster! From North Central Iowa. I'd love to be a able to deer hunt with my 99's, 250 and 300 Savage and also my Remington 81's, both 300 Savage. Tough looking at pictures and reading about hunts of others in states where they can hunt with these two rifle styles. Long time bow hunter since '69, have done alot with 12 gu shotgun, a little with muzzle loader. The last two years I've hunted with a Marlin 1894 Cowboy model in 44 Magnum. It will drop em, but would love to take either a 99 or 81 out after the critters. You have a lot of nice country in the NE part of Iowa. Have done alot of squirrel hunting over the years in the Strawberry Point area, but haven't for some time. Have family there. Your thoughts in converting a 99 to take one of the straightwall cartridges would be neat and way to go, but sounds like be more pain and $$$ than worth, if it were possible. Read on another forum about a guy who converted a 99 to shoot 35 Remington, but don't know the skinny on how and what had to be done. Over the last few years since Iowa has allowed the straightwall cartridges to be used, I sure can tell when someone fires one of those in the distance, same goes for the 45/70. Distinct sound vs a shotgun.

45-70 works real nice for whitetails.
I have a 1895 that I use.
Hopefully, I can still use it next year, there is a bill being considered that would remove the 45-70 and the 444 from the approved list.
I have no idea why.
I have e mailed the DNR to ask why the sudden switch, and have yet to receive an reply back.
I am currently looking at some 44 mag lever guns.
That said, my 99 in 300 savage gets taken out for coyote hunting.
At least we can use them here for that.
