difficult threading a new after market barrel

I bought an axisII rifle for the action. I took the barrel off and tried to screw on a prefit barrel and have difficulty getting it on the action. Any help or clues would be appreciated. Also difficulty getting the nut off the barrel. It is not the smooth nut and I was able to remove the barrel action with a wrench nut and action wrench. Thanks in advance.

There is probably a bunch of the crap that Savage puts on the threads. It gets gummed up on the barrel threads and also the receiver threads. You just have to clean all that stuff out. that's where I'd look first.

Sage Rat is 200% correct, clean the receiver
threads with a wire brush and you should be good to go.

Does the Axis action require you to remove the scope base screws to avoid damaging the barrel threads?

This is a new rifle without a scope base. I’m using the action for a build. Is the quality of savage going down. This rifle does not seem as well made as my older savages.

The Axis line leaves alot to be desired. They are not as well made as the 10/110, 11/111, or any of the other models.... particularly the recoil lug setup.

The Axis is the 'budget' model from Savage. Think "truck gun". I'd expect it to have a rougher finish/appearance than the 110 series stuff. Mine was not pretty at all but it shoots great.

And the barrel does not fit the action or the nut? What did you measure it with? Do you have any thread wires?

Another thought including the above suggestions is the action wrench itself.
If you use an action wrench similar to the Wheeler or NSS you should not tighten very tight against the receiver. It will distort it enough to prevent easy threading of the barrel. The shear strength of the 1/4-28 bolt will provide the "grip" you need, while the receiver is only held lightly in the "clamp" of the wrench.
