Took a small break during hunting season to get my 223 build on paper at 100 yds. This gun is so lightweight and will be a blast to shoot as I load more ammo.

Specs:
Savage short action (formerly 110 tactical hunter 6.5C - Cabelas special)
McGowen .223 Wylde 20” threaded barrel
Savage fluted bolt body
Talley 2 piece rings
Sig Sauer 3-9x40 scope
Factory 110 tactical hunter stock
New style Axis mag (much better latch!)

My intent was a light caliber, lightweight build to just shoot for fun and have around to shoot coyotes. More to come as I get loads worked up.

Sweet. Don’t be afraid to double lung deer with that baby. Awesome work, looks great.
What twist rate did you go with?

It is an 8 twist barrel. I shot a stud 8 pt two years ago with my 223 AR when I was going just to shoot the first doe I saw, lol. Double lunged, didn’t exit, and barely any blood. He took the 55gr Sierra bullet 75 yards. Lucky to find him. I plan to experiment with some heavier bullets and may let my son try it out soon.

That barrel will handle heavy bullets well.
Some of those tsx or other all copper bullets up in weight will smash em. I get good results on deer with the 77gn smk.
Yep one hole and not much blood, but it blisters them and they don’t go far.

Nice rifle you have built!

just a note on the wylde chamber( if it really is).
it was designed for cmp/dcm shooting at 200/300/600 yards, 20" bbls, 1/8 twist, less than 2 moa, most will do 1 moa
it is a very long throat for 80 sierras loaded to 2.45 or so.
it will shoot well with a bunch of bullets.
BUT
if you are not going to single load long 80 gr bullets there are much better
reamers out there. you will never get near the lands with a wylde chamber and a 68/69 gr bullet.
define your task, select a bullet then a reamer/chamber.
as an example i have an ar with a very short throat, it shoots hornady vmax/zmax right at .2 at 100 yards, while my long throated ar will only do about 1/2". not usgi bbls, nor mass produced bbl. match grade bbls.

Are there different opinions from (other experts), with regard to accuracy and closeness to the lands?

I have had a shilen 223 Wylde barrel for 10 years or so. It shoots really well with SMK 52 grain, 69 grain, and 80 grain. .010 t0 .025 off the lands with all of them. I would have to look and see actual length for each one
I also have a bartlein chambered in 223 wylde. only have shot 69 gr and 80 grain SMK in this one. Very accurate.

I know with rim fire a shorter tighter chamber. Produce better results.
Same with a .223 chamber vs Wilde or 5.56nato

Yes you can fire form/size seat out bullet for the same accuracy.
That barrel with that chamber and twist is screaming for 80gn bullets
Like mentioned before the all copper bullets in hand loads would just be awesome.

I like shooting the 77gn SMK's in my .223 Axis so I would bet the 80gn in yours would be a great combo. If the magazine is like many you could remove the blocking piece inside and get longer cartridges in there.
