Greetings. I purchased a 111 Trophy Hunter 30-06 over a year ago and left the standard Nikon 3-9x40 scope on the rifle. I zeroed at 100 yards with Winchester deer season 150gr making 1" groups. I have been out on a several deer/coyote hunts typically up to 200 yards and have been very happy with the rifle. I have a new property that I hunt now and there are some large open fields upwards of 400 yards. I had deer in the cross hairs at 350 yards and I wasn't too happy looking through the Nikon scope so I didn't bother taking the shot.

I am upgrading to a Leupold vx-3i 4.5-14x40 and Leupold rings. Need a little help on which type of rings to buy. The savage has the rail with weaver style rings. I am undecided on whether or not to leave the rail (or swap to a Leupold rail) and buy Leupold prw2 high rings OR remove the rail and use leupold backcounty medium rings. These two options and sizes are what came up when putting the rifle model into the Leupold mount finder on their website.

The specs state that both mounts are basically identical in height at 1.08". If I use the backcounty style mounts, is it safe to say the mounts will sit a bit lower then the prw2 rings because there is no rail? Or does the base of the backcounty mount take up the space that the rail provides? As it sits, I am happy with the height of the scope and would like to keep the new height as close as possible.

Does anyone have the specs for the standard rings? Anyone use either of these Leupold mounts on their Savage?

Why not the PRW2 mediums?

Why not the PRW2 mediums?

Not really sure. The mediums are certainly an option but the high prw2 is what Leupolds site recommened when I used the mount finder with the rifle specs. Im assuming maybe Leupold knows the hieght of the standard setup and states the medium prw2 comes in closer to those specs compared to the high option

If that is the same 30mm vx3i 4.5-14x40 that i have, then i would go with medium rings. I don't use Leupold rings on anything, but that scope should go easily on most brands of mediums. I use a Pic rail on all of my rifles and use low rings with that scope and it isn't all that low.

Sounds good!! Medium it is....

I am leaning towards the backcountry mounts. Maybe its just the look that has appeal to me and I dont really care that much for the rail since this scope will be only be used for this rifle. Just hoping these mounts sit flush on the reciever and dont hang over into the ejection port

that scope comes in either 1" or 30mm, so make absolutely sure you get the right rings. I see that you linked 30mm rings in both links, but it just made me want to ask for sure to know that you are getting the 30mm version because that will make a difference in the ring height that is required.
