My son boiled and strained walnut hulls and collected something less than a gallon of stain which is now in the fridge. It will get used on old deck boards. Will be interesting to see how it turns out. I will have to add store bought stain to stretch it.

For future knowledge is there any stabilizer or enhancer (not vinegar) that would allow long term storage? As it is now it’s basically a low acid broth that will spoil.

I found web info saying a little vinegar helps; another guy says his homemade stain is shelf stable.

3-4 coats of stain and a coat of satin outdoor water based furniture spar. Snow blower will take the slip out of it. All the boards are shot but when someone tested the stain in an inconspicuous spot - middle of the deck - I was committed to finishing it out.

Euell Gibbins would be impressed, all we needed was a walnut tree.

The old Dixie Gun Works catalogs used to have lots of information like this in them. I believe they also had a recipe for stain using tobacco.
