I had a build on a Rem 700 and a 1:9 twist barrel in .308.
I cannot get anything to shoot out of it with 165 gr.Accubonds, SGK's, Partitions, Gamechangers. I've run through H4895, Varget, 4166 as well. New B&C stock, free floated barrel. Tried 45lbs and 60lbs for screws. Running out of ideas.
Last thought is the 1:9 twist. Doesn't seem like I should HAVE to run longer or heavier bullets, but maybe I need to?

Thanks for any ideas in advance.

1-9twist?
168gn smk should shoot in a stock match federal load. If not the 175gn will

Correct. It is indeed a 1:9.
I need a hunting bullet for this setup, otherwise I would love to shoot a 168SMK.

What are you hunting?
Don’t let the smk fool you. Shoot one through some water jugs. See if you like it.

I have a bunch of 175SMK's. I can at least try it out for accuracy.
Mule Deer, to answer your question.

I think a 175gn smk will anchor a mule deer.

Action bedded at the recoil lug.
Barrel floated.
Barrel broken in or scrubbed clean.

It should shoot 1moa

Cheers mate and let’s see some results and horns
Good luck!

Pretty much any bullet should shoot an inch group, especially with 3 shots.
Im not familiar with the powders youve tried but 4064 is an old standby and so is 4320 which is nicer to use do to grain size.
As for the match bullets not being suitable, only the ones who have never used them believe that.
If youve got them use them, because they work.

As a baseline will it shoot either 168 or 175 Gold Metal Match...or any factory ammo for that matter? Got a carbon ring or a ton of copper built up in the barrel? I personally get 1/2" groups with H4895 and 168 ELD-Ms in my 308s.

I bet yours are 10 twist. I like 11 or 12 for those weight bullets. I will shoot 175s and higher in the 10 twist. The Berger Calculator says the 168s should stabilize so what do I know?

All 4 of my 308s are 10 twist. My 18" AR10 loves cheap 175gr M118LR. For the others I used to shoot 168 SMKs but got tired of the Sierra price tag. Switched to ELD-Ms and have not looked back...

Are the ELD M's that good? I don't mind spending the bucks on a good projectile but the Berger's and Lapua's do give me a bout of Touretts.

Hamiltonkiller and Robinhood for the win!
Got to the range at sunrise this morning with 180SGK and some fresh bought 185 Berger VLD Hunters.
Both with Varget. 180SGK's shot a 4 shot, 1.4" group @200.
185 Bergers shot a 1.2"group @200. Gamekings were right at 2600fps. Bergers were 2540ish.
I think this 9 twist .308 is alot happier with the heavier and longer bullets. I randomly set both bullets .020 off of jam because that has worked for me in other rifles. So I'm sure playing around a bit I could make those .75 and .6 groups even better.
Since this is a Savage forum...I cold bore shot my Savage 12FV in 6.5CM this morning in prep for Antelope next month. 1/2" under bullseye @200. That cheap a$$ gun is by far my most accurate rifle with the 143gr ELD-X and H4350.

They have worked for me so far...but I do have a box of 178 ELD-X that I have yet to try..

Have you tried any 150gr? A 150gr. bullet should be plenty 'nuff to drop a mule deer. I know it's very effective on whitetails.

Alls well that ends well.
Remember this also, you only need to get the bullet close to those speed goats and they fall right over. lol

Update:

I've been back to the range several times and could not duplicate the two groups with the Sierra 180 and Berger 185. Shotgun patterns all over again.
Found some major issues with the rifle that I've since corrected. Went out to the range again and the gun was shooting everything reasonably well for the first time during load testing.
But I think I found THE load.

168gr. Nosler Accubond LR. .020 jump
Starline Brass, CCI #200
Varget

The rifle is a Rem 700 Action
Schneider 1:9 twist, 22" barrel.
B&C Light Hunter Stock
I did do the Wyatt's extended box mod.

Well, looks like I can't post pics yet? But I was going to show you the rifle and my 3 shot @200yd, .228" group.
Guess you'll just have to trust me!

i do not trust you,
but three shot groups are fine for a hunting rifle.
if you are shooting a 4th shot..i'm not sure you are a hunter

There are very few at your level Mike. We have not caught up to that level of expertise. Just guide us to the light

Sometimes it takes a few shots just to get him turned and running in the right direction.
Toward the truck, especially if its gonna be an uphill drag.
