I'm reposting something I'd read somewhere in order to underline how effective it is !

I field striped a M1907, slathered it with MOTOR OIL, and placed in a heavy food storage bag.

I warmed (hot sun, trunk of hot car, or whatever) it a bit and left for several days. Occasionally, I'd rub the surface through the bag with my fingers and let it soak.

All surface rust, etc is dissolved by the motor oil...you can then swipe the surface with 0000 steel wool...not back and forth.. This will dissolve rust under the grips and no need to remove them (not recommended)

Typical gun oil will not do this..motor oils are designed to do this...and clean very well...patient soaking..

I now do this to all my classic, antique acquisitions .

Just wanted to validate/affirm the information...and recommend!!

Thanks for the tip! I do a lot of restoration using Kroil and 0000 steel wool, and Balistol for the final protection.
