If you experience light strikes and a lot of soot on the brass-would that be a sign of too much head space ?

Might be a sign that you need to clean the bolt, the chamber and barrel

I had to google a Mark 1. The Mark 1 is a blowback operated 22 auto pistol, every one knew that but me. Robinhood may very be correct. Blowback operated guns soot the brass often. sometimes related to type of Ammo used. May not create enough pressure to seal the brass before beganing the ejection stage. Or just Dirty.

Gary B is right, the Savage Mark I is a single shot, bolt action-ours are the FVP model which has a bull barrel and aperature sights and they are getting up around 30,000 rounds-
they all live at a Boy Scout Camp.
