Might seem like a dumb question but I have an older Savage that I put a new stainless barrel on. I'd like to paint the barrel black for hunting. What kind of paint can I use?

I used Duracoat on mine. Came out very nice.

Did you have to heat it? I looked at Duracoat but it sounds like I need to disassemble the gun and heat the barrel.

No heat needed. I used some 0000 steel wool. Cleaned it with alcohol or acetone really well. Prep is the key to a good finnish. I used a preval sprayer and was able to get a very good finish. It fuly cures in about a week but you can use the rifle sooner if you want. I bought everything but the preval sprayer from Midway. Go the Preval sprayer from Ace hardware.

Duracoat here too. No bake. It is epoxy based paint very strong and durable. Not cheap but it works. Tactical colors are much flatter than standard colors for hunting purposes.

Also, the gun or parts to be painted must be sanded down. I use a very fine grit for metal and have gone to to a 150 or lower grit on stocks to ensure the paint stays on. It will come off if not sanded but not as bad a spray paint.
