Since Axis rifles are supplied with 2 piece, Weaver style mounts, you will have some difficulty in acquiring scope rings that are narrow enough to mount your scope. Even is you are able to get rings to fit, eye relief will become an issue.
I solved the problem by purchasing a Leopold Rifleman 1 piece base which offers more options (slots) for ring spacing.
I used Vortex "hunter" Medium riflescope rings.
No more problems!

Leupold Freedom scopes also have short main tubes...mine had the added problem of 50mm Objective...solved it the same way you did.

I put a weaver rail on mine for the same reason. I even had to grind down the forward portion of the rails to clear the scope bell (I wanted to keep the lower scope height).
