A few years ago, when you couldn't BEG a box of 22wmr rounds, there was always, always plenty of 17hmr on the shelves. I used to shoot a Winchester heavy barreled 17 bolt and it shot 1/2" at 100 yards, no kidding. But at my age now, I'm thinking of adding another 17hmr in semi auto. There is a 22mag sitting in the front room, a CZ, and it is a great accurate carbine, easy to carry and accurate.

This is the heavy fluted barrel with thumbhole stock.

Could any member share comments about the Savage A17 laminate model? I don't know how best to add sights or scope or red dot.

Several of my old friends are rimfire fans, a machinist and ex-army. Yesterday they talked down the 17hmr for the 17wsm. True it out preforms the hmr by 500 fps, but try and find a box of cartridges on the shelves, and at what price. Of course they are Remington fanboys, so according to them, anything other is a pos.

I’ve got the A17, heavy barrel with grey laminated stock. Fun to shoot in a target rich PD town. Factory rotary magazine is a PITA to lock in place after loading. Easier to use aftermarket 25 round magazine. Trigger is sloppy and does not lend itself to improvement. Groups are around 1 in. at 100 yards with A17 ammo. The Savage 93R 17HMR bolt action, Mako stock, heavy barrel I traded for the A17 auto shot tighter groups. But not a significant factor since I bought the rifles for plinking and pest control.

I like a simi-auto in rimfire, the CZ 22mag is sitting in the front room now, and it is fun! 1" at 100yrds is darn good for a 17hmr with any wind, and a semi too. The 25 round mag is going to be the ticket. What gives with the sloppy trigger?
