7mm-08 AI capacity

Looking for a specific water capacity for the 7mm-08 AI......
I have most numbers I need for my projects, but the AI number
has eluded me. Checking around the various forums have drawn
me a blank. I do have most cases in my collection to weigh things
up but can't find my sample AI case. Checking a factory not fired
Hornady 7mm/08 I have measured 55.84 grs water......I have a
wildcat in the forming process (not the 7mm/08 case) and need
numbers to back up the project.

That looks a little too close to the 55.84 I'm getting with
a standard case. That's only a .46 spread !!

Depending on brand of brass the 7-08 will be 52-55 gr. The 08 case will gain 3-4% going to ai. So you'd be looking at 58gr. Volume is not the greatest benefit to going Ackley, no case stretch is the benefit

Never said anything about going Ackley, and I do not do the Ackley's.
I'm working on new ground and just need a "documented" H2O capacity
number of the 7mm-08 AI for research and comparison. If you have 10
different numbers from 10 different cases, so be it.

There are some guys on Accurate Shooter/6BR that bounce these questions and answers around pretty regular over there. Lots of smiths, manufacturers, experimenters and wildcatters. Your question might be right up their alley.

Yeah, I know quite a few of the guy's that hang around there.
So far "zilch". Just getting the standard static, like "why bother"
or "your better off doing this" or yadda yadda yadda !! I think
you know what I mean. I contacted the guy that sent me my
original sample, and he will send another.....I got to keep this
project rolling. I'm at a point in this new case change effort that
Bugholes just lightened my wallet again......LOL

One should expect that when asking for advice. I can look back in time where my interest in the inner workings of the bolt action was at it's peak. I wasted valuable time and resources barking up the wrong tree after I was told it was a waste of time. The good that came out of all that was my conviction. I did all kinds of things experimenting to make things better. Along the way Fred(and Jim) would drop me bombs when he(they) new I was chasing my tail. Many of the nations great gunsmiths have taken time to educate me and others on the hide and at 6br also.

What I have learned is that on a forum with a large number of experts and newbees alike you present your idea, accept the critics and learn how to weed out the forum members that think they know and make friends or at least listen to the guys that do.

Buddy of mine will email me some numbers tonight. Some of his cases are Hornady so he'll use those. Won't be close to the same
lot but just looking for numbers when I post up the initial phase of
the project.

Email arrived, and the water capacity of a Hornady 7mm-08 Imp 40 degree
is 58.29, from an average of 3 cases. So I'm seeing.....

7mm-08.................55.84
7mm-08 Imp/40.....58.29 ( a gain of 2.45 grs)

Again, I'm not using these cartridges in my work, just back up reference for
what I'm trying to pull off. I'll start a whole new thread for this project when
I get near the fire forming stage. As it is, I manipulated various old dies to
get the forming done. Took 7 individual pushes (baby steps), ample lanolin,
and differing draw mandrels to keep any interior donut from forming. Being
a retired tool maker / fabricator, I have a good dose of experience in blanking,
form, and draw dies.....50 Hornady cases went over to my buddies to run them
thru his Giraud annealer. Barrel that was to arrive today was pushed back to
next week. I guess UPS shipping delays. And my shooting buddy and Smith will
clear his lathe in the next two weeks. This is going to cost me some Beer !!!

It will be a good several weeks though. I just don't want to throw
things up until I get at least the first range session in, and that will
be the fire forming/break in phase. Post man did drop off some Nosler
blems yesterday for that.

A little late to the party but again, nothing I do is anything Ackley. What I did do was create the SA284
then the 284-ELF. Both I have been using in competition for a couple of years now. One mainly at 1000
yard Ridgway and the other, UBR score matches. Doing well.....

PIC.....35 degree shouldered 284 Winchester shortened to work better in the short actions. 180 class
bullets can be pushed to 2830 fps in the SA284. I'm shooting 130 SMK-HPBT's in the ELF at 2940 fps
with 40.1 grs of Varget. I have it shooting it in the low 2's at this point and still working on tune. Just
finished a whole new build for it. I'll be putting up pics in the members build thread when I get a few
things ironed out. First match with it is a UBR event at Anderson Creek this Saturday. Constant bad
weather has kept me off the range.

As a side note....With my SA284 cat being the same length as the 7/08AI, I have room for 3.4 grains of
more powder. In it's length with a .473 bolt face, nothing compares.

Ya know.. one thing you never did share with us that followed your SA284 thread. (Which I still love!) But, what was your COAL with those 183 & 185 pills? I’m trying to juggle it in my head, a 51mm case (2”), & a 1.6”+ bullet! They must be over 3.000” COAL, yeah?

I truly would consider running that chamber if it were available. Or doing the 6.5-SA284, like I had mentioned those few years back in your thread. But alas…, I went 260AI on this new barrel I ordered. I’m a Knifemaker, a “home” Gunbuilder/smith, and an all around tinkerer-machinist. But I’m not a Wildcat’r! Barrels are the only thing I don’t do on firearms. If I had space(and money really), for a proper lathe, I likely would, being I do about everything else. But in this world with Prefits barrels made better than they ever have been, it’s just not something I’ll likely ever do. Now, I do some pretty decent metal machining, fabrication & make a nifty small part here & there. Not to mention I make some truly unreal, damn beautiful custom knives… and with one hand no less! Figure I probably shouldn’t press my luck trying to turn & chamber my own barrels as well, huh? LOL! Naw… I’ll leave barrel turnin’ & chambering to those who’ve been doing it for several decades.

Yeah, they are all over 3". With my throat and the 183 SMK touching the lands, I just clear
the port on ejecting a live round. Port on the PTA I'm using measures 3.40". I did some tests
with the 190 A-Tips. And with the bullet down in the neck shoulder junction and touching the
lands, It clears the port by just a few thou.....
