Is this swap a simple remove and replace? Also, is the quality of the 116 barrel higher than an Axis, enough so that's worth the effort? Rifle is .223

thanks

thanksAlmost that simple you need head space gages and an action wrench and a way to get the barrel nut off if it's a round one I would replace it with a hex barrel nut but that's just my opinion on it as far as if the 116 is any better that i don't know. I've changed many savage barrels but always to shilen or criterion.

The 116 barrel will probably be about the same quality as the Axis barrel.

From what I understand all of the standard barrels are made the same. Maybe the target and LRP barrels have some more care put into them, but, maybe not.

The only 'advantages' I could see would be if the newer barrel is a heavier profile, longer or stainless.

Something you can do that will give improvement on just about any barrel is a properly done hand lapping. If you do it wrong you can also ruin the barrels.. believe me as I was being taught I ruined a couple before getting technique right but once I did I would see a sometimes drastic improvement. The best was a older savage that was shooting 5-6MOA with factory ammo, after lapping easily 1 MOA or better with factory ammo.. not sure how much better savage barrel production has become because I only used savage for the action.
