To make a long story short, we used to have, well loaned to us, a Remington model 600 chambered in 6mm Remington. For the short time we had it, I absolutely loved the round and my son had taken his first 2 deer with it. Since we had to return it to the owner, I have been tossing around the idea of picking up a Savage 11 in a 243Win and rebarrel it to 6mm Remington.

I know both cartridges would use the same bolt face but my concern is the length of cartridge and the short action of the model 11. From what I can figure is the 6mm Rem is still considered a short action round but probably the longest of the short action. Box mags I know are also another concern but will look into that more, or pop the mag out of the 243 and measure it with a tape.

Would anyone know if this round will work in the action?

Side note: Ammo is not a concern, already have all the brass and dies.

The 6mm Remington is based of the 7mm Mauser. The case is about 5 mm longer. IMHO You might have success with the shorter/ lighter bullets but the heavies will be seated long and need single loading. The 243 is a fine cartridge as is the 6mm Creedmoor.

The choice is yours to make, the Savage mags will go 2.940" +or-.

I went from 243 to 6mm Remington several years ago. No problem with magazine but I was using a stagger feed Savage. The Remington could have been a better "mouse trap" but Remington dropped the ball in twist rate 1-12 and the name "244"...eventually they went with a 1-9 and that made a big difference. Personally I think the 6mm Rem would do better on a long action since it is based on the 7x57 case.

Consder buyiing a long action round ( 270, 2506 ) and change barrel. It will work fine. I recently experimented and put a 243 barrel on a savage 110 long action that started life as a 7 Mag. Worked fine.

Thank you everyone for the info! I didn't think about loading heavier and longer bullets which is a factor since I live in CA where we have to use copper bullets.
