.223 on Long Action?

I'm new to the forum as I'm new to Savages. I recently acquired a a 93R17 and a Model 11 .22-250 with Varmint barrel. Loving both, and about to start reloading for the latter, though Winchester white box ammo will do 7/8" @ 100.

But over the weekend a friend tells me he has a Model 110 in .223 that he's never warmed up to because it's on a long action. I searched, but came up dry. Was there ever such a thing?

Yep, it will be interesting , or simply like mine, I have a 110 that drown in hurricane Ivan, about a year later I sent it to SSS , who rebuilt the LH LA 308 bolt AND built a complete LH LA bolt for a 223. the 223 was so much fun to shoot I sold the 308 Bbl.

Yeah, they came that way from the factory at one time (didn't have SAs). I've not seen one yet, but I'll likely be shooting this one on Friday - 26 inch varmint barrel. I'm assuming it's a 1in9 twist.

I had one of those back in the 90s. Mag box was blocked for the shorter 223 cartridge. Rifle was a tack driver with 52 grain Sierra Match Kings out to 300 yards. Magazine had a metal block that was tack welded in.

Even Savage short action magazines are blocked for the .223 cartridge by about 1/2 inch of plastic.

It the rifle was a long action, the block would be well over 1 inch.
Here is a picture of a .223 10 FCP-K mag (bottom) compared to a .308 mag for a 10 FCP-K. Both are short action.

My 12 FV had an internal hidden mag that was blocked by 1/2 inch of plastic also.
Here are pictures of the short action bolts for the 12 FV (stainless) and the 10 FCP-K (blued). Both show the flange on the bolt that keeps the bolt face at the front portion of the block in the mag. The .308 and 6.5mm Creedmoor short action bolts don't have that flange.

If the block wasn't present in the mag and the flange wasn't present to keep the bolt from sliding past the block in the mag, the .223 wouldn't feed reliably because the cartridge wouldn't pop up out of the mag on a slant to silde into the chamber.
AICS mags for my 12 FV for use in the Oryx chassis have the rear top of the mag short of the mag well for the same reason.

Last yeari bought my wife her "new" Savage.
A 110 FP in 223.
Think of it as forerunner to the 12 FV.
24" heavy barrel.
F= plastic stock
P= police.

Shoots 69gr Sierra MatchKings under an inch with boring regularity.

Just for giggles I have a 110 long action with a 7.62x30mm cartridge barrel on it. Works just fine. You can build anything on a long action.
