I'm planning on my first bedding job soon (normal 1st time, then pillar for my Remmy)

Going to use the Neutral Shoe Polish for release, and this for bedding:

Wish me luck..!

Marine tex is used commonly with good results as is PC-7 or JB weld. Johnson pastewax will give you a perfect negative cast of your action and is good for waxing the stock and metal work for everyday protection. Bisonite is still my favorite, Brownells still carries I beleive. Google says championshooters .com is source. As a note the stell containing epoxies ahve shown some tendency in the past to cause hidden rusting whereas the aluminum products did not. Devcon also comes in aluminum based form and in 2 consistencies, one a paste the other a flowable for casting or precision resurfacing a"rough bedding" job.

Shot again today and got a nice triangle, not 2 in and 1 out but a nice even triangle that went .674".

Bisonite was the early favorite starting back in the 60s. The big problems with it was that some bore cleaning solvents would eat it up. I do not know if they improved the formulation.

Myself I only use the Devcon or Marine-Tex. Marine-Tex is nice in 2oz packages but if you try to pick them up at a local boat shop they will bend you over like Gumby and I have seen it for over $20 a package, online you can pick it up for around $10. The gray has a higher compressive strength then the white.

I use probly more Devcon Aluminum putty (10610) then anything else but you have to buy 1lb at a time. The steel and stainless steel has about the same strength but the titanium putty would be the berries, unfortunately, twice the cost.

What you want in a bedding compound is that it is harder then woodpecker lips, resistant to most chemicals and little to none shrinkage. Even though Devcon, Marine-Tex and Permatex is made by the same company most Devcon products are mil-spec with a tech data sheet that is the facts. The just do not list just a value but also the ATSM test used to get that value. Just for example Devcon aluminum putty has a compressive strength of 8,420psi, a flexural strength of 6,760psi and a cured shrink rate of .0008 in./in. (that is 8 100,000th of a inch per inch).

If your bedding a rifle with a mag well it takes less then 2oz. If your doing a full bed on a single shot it takes about 3oz. One thing you do not want is to come up short so for a full bedding job I will mix 100 grams but use usually 60-70 grams.

Just a general question here....
What materials can be used successfully to bed a rifle other than Devcon?
Once person mentioned JBWELD. This I can get locally both in 1-2 oz. tubes and larger 8oz. I think sets.
I guess you need a non-shrink type of stuff. I remember my Dad using fiberglass in the foreend of his rifle.

Thanks

The old Acraglas was a bear to use and real finicky on the mix ratio. Too much hardener and it became brittle and would "sugar" or crystallize. Not enough and it would stay gummy. Then once you mixed it you had a small window where it was just the right consistency. The Acraglass gel is a big improvement.

If you want it cheap JB weld would be better then say "bondo" automotive filler. Then again if you doing a light barreled low recoil rifle the bedding compound selection would not be as critical as say with a 300 RUM with a 28" heavy barrel.

As far as release agent it is tough to beat Kiwi neutral. Just do not glop it on thick. If your release agent is .060" thick your not going to get a good fit. Even a quality automotive wax would do.

I have done about 3-4 rifles with JB weld and I did not like it.
Too runny and did not get a good bond in some thin areas.

Marinetex works very well but is a bit expensive.

To my knowledge all the steel epoxy resin compounds are essentially the same. They may even be the same but in different packaging. I'll bet the ones from Midway are the same as the ACE hardware injection tube.
