Is there any downside to building a rifle on a large shank action where it is unnecessary? I'm just wondering if I were to find a good deal on a donor that happened to be large shank, should I pass? Are barrels any more expensive or are there any stock fit issues? Thanks

No downsides at all, smile and enjoy a Great Deal.

Don't think the barrels are more expensive, but they are less common if you want to buy them used. I'd say they're very uncommon in fact.

This is the only downside I can think of though. . .

That is the only downside I could think of also. You're not going to find a factory take off barrel in a large shank very often unless its a WSM or LRPV barrel.

That seems to be the only downside. All the custom barrel makers will make a large shank barrel for you and most of them are the same price as the standard shank. IMHO the large shank has far more pros than cons. I like them so good that I've had two long actions that were standard shank converted to large shank.
